Outlook:

Bonners Ferry will look to improve on impressive showings at state last year, featuring several podium places, including one athlete who stood on the top step. As a team, the girls took fourth place and the boys finished 15th.

Several members of the group that went to state are back this year.

Giovanni Faraoni, Ben Middleton, Conrad Hiatt and Spiro Petras finished fifth in the 4x200 relay and all return, though Hiatt is injured. Riley Beggerly finished eighth in the long jump, while James Morgen placed fifth in discus. Both are back this season.

Makenna Baisden, who finished second in the 400 meters, returns, as does Eva Willis, who took second in the high jump. Willis, Ireland Grady and Baisden also finished third in the sprint medley relay last season.

Hallie and Hana Hartman finished second and third in shot put behind Helene Rae to form an all-Bonners Ferry podium last year. They will look to improve on those finishes this spring.

Head Coach Alec Hamilton’s comments: “One of my big pushes this year is to really lean into the team aspect of it, with track being such an individual sport,” Hamilton said. “You can bring home medals as an individual, but you bring home trophies as a team.”

On mindset and hard work:

“If we walk away and we never get a trophy at any meet we go to, I’m not going to be upset,” Hamilton said. “As long as I feel like our kids are working their hardest and driving to get better.”

“We’ve got a lot of kids who are just excited and chomping at the bit to go compete,” Hamilton said.

“We set high expectations and high standards,” Hamilton said. “If the kids come up a little bit short, if we hold them to those high expectations and standards, they’re still going to do great things.”

On athletes to look out for this season:

“One that comes to mind right away is Daric Vincent,” Hamilton said. “What really stood out to me was that willingness to step up when asked,” Hamilton said.

“Our sprinters always impress me, just how hard they work,” Hamilton said. “They’re competing with each other. That’s Ben Middleton, Giovanni Faraoni, Spiro Petras and Riley Beggerly.”

“The Hartman twins in shot put and discus are impressive,” Hamilton said. “James Morgen’s another one.”
