Local students competed in district tournaments for the Region 1 Idaho Battle of the Books, a statewide voluntary reading program that encourages and recognizes students' love of reading.

IBOB is an optional statewide reading competition. Each team of three to four students reads 16 books, and is tested on grade-appropriate questions in a quiz-show format about the books they've read. Many questions begin with "In which book," and are answered with the correct title and author.

Librarians held the Coeur d'Alene School District's fourth annual IBOB tournament March 18 at Ramsey Magnet School of Science. Elementary teams from Atlas, Fernan, Ramsey and Sorensen each participated.

The Riptide Readers team from Atlas Elementary emerged victorious. Prizes included the traveling IBOB trophy and donations from the Well-Read Moose, Mrs. Honeypeeps Sweet Shop and 32Below Froyo.

Students from six elementary schools in the Lakeland Joint School District participated on 22 teams that competed at Twin Lakes Elementary School. The Well-Read Moose team from Twin Lakes won the Lakeland IBOB.

Two teams from Twin Lakes, the Well-Read Moose and the Golden Girls, and the Total Recall team from Spirit Lake Elementary will participate in regionals not because they won districts, but because they committed to reading all 16 books for the full IBOB competition. These are the only three teams in Lakeland that made that commitment.

Each school will send two teams to the regional tournament, which will be April 18 at Twin Lakes Elementary School. Schools from Region 2 in the Lewiston area will also participate.
