The Bureau of Land Management has approved three fuels management projects in North Idaho to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk in the wildland-urban interface.
The projects, located in Kootenai County and Shoshone County, are designed to increase forest resilience to pests, diseases and wildfires while protecting nearby communities and infrastructure.
The Mica Bay Project, near Coeur d’Alene, will include thinning, prescribed burning and timber harvest across 287 acres of forest land.
The Blackwell Project, also near Coeur d’Alene, will focus on mechanical fuel reduction and pile burning on approximately five acres.
The Lynch Gulch Project, located near Pinehurst in Shoshone County, will involve thinning and prescribed fire treatments across 73 acres.
Initial thinning operations should begin this summer, with timber harvest activities scheduled for the fall. Prescribed burning is anticipated to begin in 2027.
