March 31, 1976 – WRESTLERS PLACE WELL 

Sandpoint’s junior high wrestling team ended the season Saturday by placing eight of 14 wrestlers, including four firsts, in the Post Falls Invitational. Individual results were: 80 lb. – Scott Newcomb, first; 92 – Mike DeMers, fourth; 110 – John Travers, third and Doug Schoonover, first; 116 – Greg Gissel, first; and Pat Perry, second; 130 – Jim Rosholt, first; 137 – Dwight Lee, third. Competing but not placing were: 86 – Tim McDermott, 104 – Barry Stoddard; 123 – Russell Gee; 130 – Steve Schoonderwoerd and Eric Balch; 137 – Bob Plaster. Coach Mike Larsen and BCYAA wrestling commissioner Chuck Schoonover were surprised to learn that no team scoring of the event took place.

POMEROY-PULFER ENGAGEMENT TOLD 

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Pulfer Jr., Quincy, Ohio, announce the engagement of their daughter, Cathleen Ann, to Mr. Jonathan Lee Pomeroy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren E. Pomeroy, Sandpoint. 

The prospective bride and groom will both graduate May 23 from Warner Pacific College, Portland, Ore., Cathy with a major in Language Arts education and Jon with a major in Religion. Jon plans to continue his education at Anderson School of Theology, Anderson, Indiana. The wedding will take place in the Warner Pacific College Chapel on May 24, with a reception held in Ohio in June.

March 31, 1951 – JOINS HUSBAND IN ILLINOIS 

Mrs. Ralph Berger, the former Betty Porath, left by car for Milwaukee, Wis., where she was met by her husband. The young couple then drove to Bellevue, Ill., their new home while he attends radio mechanic school at Scott AFB. They were married Dec. 26 while he was on furlough. Prior to enlisting, Pvt. Berger worked for the state highway dept.  Mrs. Berger worked two years for the J.C. Penney store.

LT. VERNON VERHEI WRITES HOME 

Mr. and Mrs. V.A. Verhei of Sagle received a letter from Okinawa from their son, Vernon, a reservist in the air corps who was recalled to active duty last November. Lt. Verhei, who was in flight training at the close of WWII, attended Sandpoint high, later graduating from a Seattle high school. He earned a degree in civil engineering from W.S.C., Pullman. His wife, the former Delores Gooby, and 16-month-old son, Ronnie, are residing with her parents in Sandpoint during his absence.

WOMAN MARINES NEEDED 

Women ages 18 to 31 are being accepted for immediate active duty in the marine corps. An applicant must be unmarried, have a high school education or equivalent and successfully pass mental and physical examinations. Women who are selected will be sent to Parris Island, So. Carolina, for basic training. Upon graduation they will be assigned to aviation, classification, communications, motor transport, clerical and many other type duties.
