POST FALLS — You can excuse Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Annabelle Carr for taking a quick look back in the final 50 meters en route to victory in Thursday’s 1,600-meter run in the District 1 All-Star Meet at Post Falls High.

She’s spent a good amount of time challenging herself in the hopes of defending state 4A titles in the 800 and 1,600 individually.

And really, she just wanted to see where her teammate — senior Helen Oyler — was at as well.

Carr competed in the Oregon Relays on April 4, finishing seventh in the 800 and 22nd in the 1,600. Carr also competed in the Nike Indoor national meet in New York in March, winning the 400 and finishing 17th in the 800. Carr has won the last two state 4A cross country individual titles as well.

“I was so happy to get to go run in Oregon with the faster girls,” Carr said. “It’s definitely what I needed in the mile. I’m not really a distance runner, and don’t do well with long distances, and on my own, I tend to get lost. I was lucky to have that in Oregon.”

Carr wanted to compete in the Nike Twilight Meet at Jesuit High in Portland last week, but had her petition denied by the Idaho High School Activities Association, based on number of meets an athlete can compete in during the season.

“It was bummer,” Carr said. “It could have been really good for me. It looked like a really good race, and would have been good to go.”

On Thursday, Carr won the girls 1,600 in 5 minutes, 9.89 seconds, followed by Oyler, who was second in 5:19.30.

“I haven’t raced her all season, so I was wondering how she was doing,” Carr said. “I’ve been waiting to race her all season, but we haven’t had the opportunity. I trust my speed, and was hoping I’d be around some other girls at the end, but today, it felt like I was cruising a little bit.”

Oyler signed in April to compete in track and cross country at Spokane Colleges. Carr also won the 800 (55.92 seconds) and was the anchor leg on the Panthers' winning 4x400 relay team with Oyler, senior Reagan Meine — who won the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles — and freshman Brielle Meine.

Carr signed with Oregon in November.

“It felt so good to compete there,” Carr said. “Looking around, I felt so good. Getting to look around, God opened a great opportunity for me to go run there that someone like me never would have thought about being able to go there.”

Carr also had a visit set up with Washington State, but opted to sign with Oregon once the offer came in.

“I wanted to stay closer to home,” Carr said. “Oregon was probably the furthest I was willing to go. Once I got that offer, I just had to stop. It’s the best school and so beautiful. I’m a family person and getting to be around a coaching staff like that feels really special to me.”

The top 16 individuals and eight relays in District 1 qualified for the all-star meet.

No team scores were kept.
