PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint baseball shuts down Lewiston for first district title since 2022
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 2 hours, 15 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 1, 2026 8:00 PM

Bulldogs battle past Bears for single season wins record
Sandpoint 5, Moscow 2
SANDPOINT — Moscow put up a fight, but Parker Reichart and Sandpoint were too much for the Bears.
The standout senior went 3-for-3 with an RBI single and a double and scattered baserunners throughout his complete-game effort on the mound as the No. 1 Bulldogs used a four-run second inning to take down the No. 4 Bears for the fifth time this season in a 5A District 1-2 opening round game held Friday at War Memorial Field.
To lead off the second frame, senior Sage Medeiros doubled, senior Soren Caprio hit an RBI single, and junior Landon Day smashed an RBI double in three consecutive plate appearances as the Bulldogs got out to a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, junior Brennan Shaw and Reichart connected for back-to-back RBI singles to push the lead to four runs, which stood until senior Mason Little added a fifth run to the tally in the fourth inning with an RBI single to center field.
Reichart, who picked up his second win of the year, was effective in his start on the rubber. The right-hander threw 59 of his 91 pitches for strikes and struck out six batters across seven innings as he worked through four frames where Moscow recorded a base hit to lead things off. The Bulldogs' defense, which saw junior catcher Jack Schriber throw out a runner attempting to steal second in the fourth, complimented Reichart's performance nicely with a double play to close out the fifth.
The only time Moscow was able to cross the plate was in the sixth inning, when Dan Fitt produced a two-out, two-run double. The Bears, ineligible for further postseason contention due to their MaxPreps rankings, finished the season with a record of 4-15.
Caprio and Shaw both had two base hits in total and senior Dallen Williams doubled in the Bulldogs' winning effort — their 19th such effort of the season — which officially breaks the single season school record of 18 wins set in 2006, when Sandpoint won its last state championship.

Bulldogs shut down Bengals for first district title since 2022
Sandpoint 8, Lewiston 2
SANDPOINT — There was no messing around during Friday's 5A District 1-2 Championship game at War Memorial Field.
Senior Mason Little went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI double, senior Sage Medeiros reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season (10) and gave up no earned runs over 5.1 innings of work on the bump, recording his 100th career strikeout in the process, and the Bulldogs got to work early as they claimed their first district title since 2022 with a six-run win over the Bengals.
Medeiros added a multi-hit effort at the plate, including an RBI single, and junior Jack Schriber and seniors Hayden Miller and Soren Caprio hit RBI singles of their own in the win for Sandpoint, which scored four runs in the first frame and three in the third en route to victory.
Leading 7-0, Lewiston loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but the Bulldogs limited the damage to two runs thanks to some stellar play on the defensive side of the ball. Sandpoint also turned a 4-6-3 double play in the fifth — from Little to senior Parker Reichart to junior Carson Resso — to limit the Bengal momentum.
"I'm pretty speechless," Sandpoint High first-year head coach Jesse Dunham said following the postgame celebration. "All of these guys have put in the work and have grinded with me every single day. I just have all the respect in the world for these athletes. They trust me, and I trust them, and we've formed a pretty good bond. I have been very blessed."
Sandpoint (20-2), ranked No. 2 in 5A in the latest MaxPreps rankings, will take a 12-game winning streak into a 5A Super Regional in which they will host this upcoming Friday and Saturday at War Memorial Field. Current projections include No. 7 Hillcrest and No. 11 Idaho Falls coming to town, although official brackets, with times, dates and locations, will be released this coming week by the IHSAA.
Guy Krasselt was 2-for-2 with a triple and an RBI for Lewiston (18-8), which is expected to qualify for the 5A Super Regional of their own due to their No. 10 ranking in the latest MaxPreps rankings.

Spartans headed to Super Regional after defeat of Lumberjacks
Priest River 6, St. Maries 2
OROFINO — When Priest River needed a win to secure their spot in a 3A Super Regional, Jacob Best dialed in.
The standout sophomore whiffed seven batters across seven three-hit innings on the mound and went 2-for-2 with a double and a pair of walks at the plate as the No. 2 Spartans locked in for a four-run win over the No. 4 Lumberjacks in a 3A District 1-2 second-place game held Friday at Orofino High.
Down 1-0 early, junior Dave Findley broke the ice for Priest River with an RBI single to left field to tie the game. The third and fourth innings is where the Spartans took control, scoring five more runs across the two frames by way of either errors or walks with the bases loaded. Juniors Colton Kurpienko, Brayden Elder, Broden Collins and Karsen Garvin all singled during the rally for Priest River, which outhit St. Maries 7-3.
Harlen Baker had two hits, including an RBI single, for St. Maries, which finished the season with a record 4-12 as their MaxPreps ranking is not likely to qualify them for further postseason contention.
Priest River, currently ranked No. 5 in the 3A state rankings according to MaxPreps, is projected to face off in a Super Regional against No. 4 Salmon and No. 9 Wendell. Official brackets, with times, dates and locations, will be released this coming week by the IHSAA.

TRACK & FIELD
Sandpoint girls break 19-year-old 4x400 relay record at Meet of Champions
POST FALLS — Having a strong 4x400 relay is the mark of a solid track & field team.
The Lady Bulldogs proved that to be true Thursday when Elizabeth Storms, Ruthie Laughridge, Elia Howard and Ani Vick combined to break the school record as they led Sandpoint at the District 1 Meet of Champions held at Post Falls High.
The foursome finished third out of six teams with a time of 4 minutes, 4.76 seconds, .85 seconds ahead of the school's previous record set by Desirae Hutchings, Chanel Garcia, Nicole Van Dyk and Megan Bartlett at the 2007 state meet.
Howard, a senior, added a win in the 100-meter dash (12.46) and was third in the 100-meter hurdles (15.25) with a pair of new personal bests while Storms, a junior, captured a bronze in the 800-meter dash (2:18.48) and Laughridge, a sophomore, claimed third in the 1600-meter run (5:28.27) with a new personal best of her own for Sandpoint, which placed sixth out of 13 scoring teams. Senior Jasmin Laing won the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches) and senior Izzy Davidson vaulted to a second-place finish in the pole vault (9 feet, 3 inches) to round out the Lady Bulldogs' top performances on the day.
In boys action, senior Maverick Gomez won the 100-meter dash (10.78), senior Isaac Schmit won the 200-meter dash (22.39), and the two combined with junior Trey Blumenberg and senior Kamren Ziarnick to pick up wins in the 4x100 relay (42.24) and the 4x200 relay (1:29.02) at the event, which featured the top 16 individuals and eight relays in District 1. Blumenberg added to the Bulldogs' medal tally in the sprints with second-place finishes in both the 100 (10.98) and 200 (22.44) with a pair of personal bests. Junior Knox Williams came away with a new personal best of his own in the 400-meter dash (51.01), good enough for a second-place finish for Sandpoint, which won the meet with a total of 144 points.
In the distance events, senior Paul Kent and sophomore Kai Budensiek went 1-2 in the 1600-meter run with times of 4 minutes, 27.50 seconds and 4 minutes, 28.52 seconds, respectively, with Budensiek's time being a new personal best. Sophomore Hobbes Conley (10:04.68) and freshman Landon Conner (10:06.39) did much of the same in the 3200-meter run with new personal bests of their own. In the throws, junior Damian Porter moved up to No. 5 all-time in Sandpoint High history in the discus as he finished second with a new personal best toss of 154 feet, 8 inches.
It was none other than Priest River High's Niki Porinchok who won the discus with a throw of 164 feet even. It's the eighth time the standout senior, who was also fourth in the shot put (45 feet, 10 inches), has posted a win in the event this season. Fellow senior Ian Lamanna was up to business as usual as well, winning the pole vault with a clear of 14 feet, 3 inches and the long jump with a mark of 21 feet, 8 inches, which beat out his own school record by six inches set on April 20 in Bonners Ferry.
Clark Fork High senior Westin Caven was sixth in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.49) and 300-meter hurdles (43.51) while freshman Kingston Hudson leaped to a new personal best of 39 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump for a fourth-place finish for the Wampus Cats, which will head to the Kellogg Last Chance Invitational today.
Sandpoint and Priest River will turn their attention towards their respective district championships. Sandpoint competes at the 5A District 1-2 Championship on May 7 and 8 at the P1FCU Sports Complex in Lewiston. Priest River heads to St. Maries High for the 3A District 1-2 Championships on May 8 and 9.
