COEUR d’ALENE — Falling behind by five runs before they even batted did not deter the Lake City Timberwolves on Thursday.

Lake City responded with six runs in its first at-bat, finished with three home runs and defeated the visiting Post Falls Trojans 16-10 in the loser-out first round of the 6A District 1 tournament.

Junior Tabitha Lopez hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning and finished with five RBIs for second-seeded Lake City (15-5), which plays top-seeded Coeur d’Alene (18-0) in a best-of-3 series for the district title, starting Saturday at noon at Coeur d’Alene High.

“The team showed fight today,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “When we got down in the first, our offense stepped into the box with resolve to gain back the momentum. It was fun to watch. That’s the kind of fight we need to take into Saturday’s game.”

Post Falls finished 9-13.

Sophomore Brooklyn Caan finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored for Lake City, and her two-run double in the second inning put the Timberwolves up 8-6.

In the first inning, KaeLee Kolden hit a two-run homer for Lake City, Lopez added a two-run double and Mia Kesner delivered a two-run blast.

Natalie Stroud and Kulani Peahu had RBI doubles, and Rylan Morrison and Lexie McCarroll had run-scoring singles in Post Falls’ five-run first.
