SANDPOINT — Families across the region are invited to take part in a series of biking events this May designed to promote safety, healthy activity, and community connection among local youth.

The Lake Pend Oreille School District Safe Routes to School program is leading several initiatives throughout the month, beginning with Bike to School Day on May 6. This nationwide event encourages students and families to ride to school together while raising awareness about the importance of safe biking routes, reducing traffic congestion, and increasing daily physical activity for children.

Continuing throughout the month, Farmin Stidwell Elementary School will host its weekly “Bike Bus” every Friday through May 29. The program offers a fun and structured way for students to bike to school safely in a group setting.

Led by teachers, students gather at the Hickory Park Gazebo at 7:15 a.m. and ride along designated neighborhood routes, picking up additional riders along the way. Maps and permission slips are available through the school.

Mid-month, families can participate in a Bike Rodeo at Hope Elementary School on May 16 from 10 a.m. to noon, held in conjunction with the school’s Spring Fling celebration.

Youth participants are encouraged to bring their bikes and helmets to practice safety skills and enjoy a morning of outdoor activity. Free helmets will be available while supplies last.

The month concludes with the Sandpoint Bike Rodeo on May 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Sandpoint Library, 1407 Cedar St. This free, family-friendly event requires no pre-registration and will feature bike safety checks, minor repairs, and hands-on skill-building activities. Helmets will also be provided to children in need while supplies last.

“These events are a great way to bring families together while helping kids build confidence and safety skills on their bikes,” Erin Billings, LPOSD Safe Routes to School coordinator said. “We’re excited to see students and families riding together throughout the month.”
