Cataldo wins in a playoff, Teeters places third

Featuring a fairway fight to the finish that ended with a chip shot playoff between friendly Mineral County rivals Phin Cataldo of Superior and Denver Thomas of St. Regis, the Trestle Creek Invitational was played in St. Regis April 30.

St. Regis freshman Khila Teeters won third place to lead local efforts in the Trestle Creek girls competition.

Cataldo won the playoff with Thomas but that didn’t stop St. Regis golfers from claiming the boys team championship with a combined team score of plus-53. Seeley-Swan finished second at +59, Superior third at +62, Florence (+126) fourth, Darby (+129) fifth and Two Eagle River (143) sixth.

Paced by first and second place winners Oakley Berg and Jordan Kidd, Florence won the girls side of the tournament and Darby took second.

Cataldo and Thomas ended the 18 holes played at familiar Trestle Creek, where both Superior and St. Regis teams generally practice, tied at seven over par. There originally was not a playoff set to determine a winner, so the two decided to face off anyway, in a chipping playoff.

“They know each other real well, are both seniors and have played together a lot playing the same course and all,” St. Regis coach Dan Park said. “So they decided to settle it with a chip playoff and Phin won.”

Using the State C tournament format of three scoring players, the Tigers also used the scores of fifth-place Connor Lulis (+21) and seventh play Dominic Mancini (+25) to compute to the low gross and win the tournament.

Teeters shot +27 to lead the Tiger girls and Austyn Dahlka also played for St. Regis carding +87. Florence won the team title and Darby claimed second place in the girls tournament.

Helping coach Seth Kuhl and his Bobcat boys to the second place team finish were Neal Orr (+27), Brydon Drey (+28), Dalton Boyce (+32) and Henry Hanson (+36).

Park said the numbers were down for participation slightly this year but that it was still a good day of golf for all involved. “It was a good tournament played on a beautiful day on a great course.”

Park said that he was still hoping to get an invitation to the Old Works tournament in Anaconda Thursday but had not received notification as of Sunday. St. Regis golfers are set to play in the Gary Thompson Invitational in Thompson Falls (results were not available).

The Western C Divisional tournament is in Shelby May 11 and the State C tourney is also in Shelby May 18-19.
