I-90 ramp closures, detours underway

COEUR d’ALENE — The Idaho Transportation Department has begun work to reconstruct on- and off-ramps at both the U.S. 95 and Northwest Boulevard interchanges as part of the ongoing Interstate 90 expansion between Coeur d’Alene and Post Falls.
This work requires demolishing existing ramps and reconstructing them to meet modern engineering standards. Construction will also allow ramps to handle growth and be compatible with future roadway expansion, a press release said.
Two temporary, weeklong I-90 ramp closures are planned.
• U.S. 95 westbound on-ramp to I-90, which started Monday.
• I-90 westbound off-ramp to Northwest Boulevard, starting May 11. Drivers will exit I-90 at U.S. 95 and use Appleway Avenue to access Northwest Boulevard.
All closures will be in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the duration of each closure period.
"As two of the most heavily traveled interchanges on the corridor, ITD anticipates significant increases in congestion and delays in the surrounding area during these closures," a press release said.
In addition, the North Idaho Centennial Trail will be closed between Prairie Trail and Northwest Boulevard beginning the week of May 11 to accommodate I-90 widening construction and city waterline improvements. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will detour via Riverstone Drive. This phase of work is expected to be completed by mid-July.
"The I-90 widening project will expand the corridor to four lanes in each direction, improve safety, and reduce congestion along one of North Idaho’s busiest routes. Construction is expected to continue through 2029," the release said.
