St. Ignatius Seniors: Checking your blood pressure?
Theresa Yares | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 54 minutes AGO
High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” because it rarely produces any warning signs or symptoms. More than 40% of adults don’t know they have high blood pressure. Ask to have your blood pressure checked when you see your health care provider.
I worked with a Family Practice doctor who insisted that I check each patient’s blood pressure when they came in to see him, even for routine follow-up visits. I discovered there were a number of his patients who had high blood pressure, they “felt fine” and had no symptoms.
One patient voiced her annoyance to me (and rightly so) that I did not take her blood pressure at her last visit. Some pharmacies and grocery stores also provide blood pressure stations for quick BP checks. You are your own best advocate, and don’t hesitate to ask to have your blood pressure checked regularly.
