PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint boys track & field claims district title behind more record-breaking performances
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 53 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 9, 2026 1:05 AM
Gomez a part of four school records as Bulldogs take back title
TRACK & FIELD
COEUR d'ALENE/LEWISTON — Maverick Gomez left no doubt that he's one of the best sprinters in the state after the 5A District 1-2 Championship concluded on Friday night at the P1FCU Sports Complex.
Between day one on Thursday at Coeur d'Alene High and day two in Lewiston, Gomez, a senior, won the 100-meter dash in a new school record time of 10.69 seconds, was second in the 200-meter dash with a new school record time of 21.60 seconds, and was a part of the school-record-breaking 4x100 and 4x200 relays as the Bulldogs reclaimed the district title in dominant fashion.
Gomez beat out his own school record in the 100, set on April 17, by 0.01 seconds and beat out his own school record in the 200, set on April 25, by a whopping .29 seconds. He joined up with seniors Kamren Ziarnick and Isaac Schmit and junior Trey Blumenberg to win the 4x100 relay (41.82) as they broke their own school record by .25 seconds after setting it earlier this year in Walla Walla. Gomez, Schmit and Blumenberg then combined with junior Knox Williams to shatter the 4x200 relay school record with a time of 1 minute, 27.35 seconds, just 0.04 seconds behind gold-medal Moscow. The previous record of 1 minute, 28.65 seconds belonged to Schmit, Gomez, Blumenberg and Van Lee, set at last year's district championship meet.
Williams added a silver medal to Sandpoint's tally in the 400-meter dash, breaking the coveted sub-50 mark with a time of 49.95 seconds — a new school record by .11 seconds. The previous school record was set 39 years ago by Chad Childears.
In the mid-distance and distance events, Sandpoint High senior Paul Kent, junior Jack Lovin, and sophomore Kai Budensiek commanded the field. Kent won both the 1600-meter run (4:27.11) and 3200-meter run (9:40.07), Budensiek took second in both of those events (4:27.36 & 9:41.95), and Lovin ran to a new personal best time of 1 minute, 58.63 seconds in the 800-meter run as he edged out three other sub-2-minute finishers for a gold medal of his own.
Kelton Vasile rounded out the automatic state bids on the track with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. His time of 16.44 seconds was a new personal best by 1.57 seconds.
In the field events, Sandpoint, which defeated runner-up Moscow by more than 20 points, grabbed three more gold medals. Sophomore Caleb Tomlinson won the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches), sophomore Hayden Peterson won the javelin (150 feet, 2 inches) and freshman Clayton Ernst stole the show in the jumps with a gold-medal leap of 43 feet, 0.5 inches in the triple jump — a new personal best by over 3-and-a-half feet and the third-best mark in school history. Sophomore Wyatt Neal rounded out the automatic state-qualifying bids for Sandpoint as he cleared a new personal best of 13 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to place second overall.
Howard breaks 26-year-old 100-meter hurdles school record
Speaking of records, senior Elia Howard broke one of her own for the Lady Bulldogs, which placed third out of four scoring teams with 54 points. Howard was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a new school record time of 14.88 seconds — only behind multiple-event reigning state champion Mattea Nuhn of Moscow. The previous school record of 14.97 seconds was set by Stacey Bolstad in 2000. Howard also placed second in both the 100-meter dash (12.29) and 200-meter dash (25.92) as she collected three medals and a trio of new personal bests on the day.
Junior Elizabeth Storms stormed her way to two medals, winning the 800-meter run with a new personal best time of 2 minutes, 18.13 seconds and placing second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 23.15 seconds. Sophomore Delaney Barron captured Sandpoint's final automatic state bid on the track as she clocked a new personal best time of 12 minutes, 24.82 seconds in the 3200-meter run, good enough for a strong second-place finish.
In the field events, senior Izzy Davidson shared a district title in the pole vault (10 feet) while senior Jasmin Laing cleared 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump for a silver medal of her own. Junior Jordyn Tomco, now a state qualifier in three different sports for Sandpoint High, rounded out the Lady Bulldogs' top performances with a new personal best mark of 98 feet, 9 inches in the javelin for a second-place finish.
All of Sandpoint's state qualifiers, along with any individuals who receive wildcard bids, will compete next at the 5A State Track & Field Championship set for May 15-16 at Mountain View High in Meridian.

Sandpoint no-hits Knights for 5A Super Regional North Qualifier win
Sandpoint 10, Hillcrest 0 (5)
SANDPOINT — Senior Sage Medeiros threw his second five-inning no-hitter of the year, striking out eight batters in the process, junior Brennan Shaw went 3-for-3 and tripled during Sandpoint's first at-bat of the night, and the No. 2 Bulldogs had no trouble putting away the No. 7 Knights of Idaho Falls as they cruised to a 5A Super Regional North Qualifier shutout win on Friday night at War Memorial Field.
After allowing back-to-back walks in the first frame, Medeiros, who reached the upper-80s on his fastball and threw 48 of his 75 pitches for strikes, retired the next 13 batters in order, including a 1-2-3 fifth frame where every Hillcrest batter went down swinging.
Up 2-0 heading into the fourth frame thanks to a sacrifice fly by junior Jack Schriber in the first and an RBI triple by junior Dallen Williams in the third, the Bulldogs put up a 7-spot to pull away. Williams, who was 2-for-3 on the night, hit an RBI double, senior Soren Caprio, who tripled in the contest, drew a bases loaded walk, and Medeiros knocked home a run via an RBI single in back-to-back-to-back plate appearances as Sandpoint pushed the lead to five runs. The Bulldogs, who also got a sacrifice fly from senior Parker Reichart to end the rally, then scored one run apiece in four more consecutive at-bats as they drew three straight walks with the bases loaded.
Hillcrest (18-8-2), averaging exactly 10 runs per game coming into Friday night, beat No. 11 Idaho Falls (13-12-1) earlier in the day by a score of 15-5 in six innings to advance.
Junior Carson Resso induced the run-rule with a sacrifice fly of his own in the fifth for Sandpoint (21-2), which had nine hits in total in the contest and has now won 13 straight games. The Bulldogs will face the winner of Idaho Falls-Hillcrest, set to play in a loser-out game at 12 p.m., in Game 4 of the regional at 2 p.m. at War Memorial Field. If victorious, the Bulldogs will punch their ticket directly to the four-team 5A State Championship tournament next week. If necessary, they'll play in a winner-take-all Game 5 at 4 p.m. due to the qualifier's double-elimination format.

Stevens erupts for career-high 7 RBIs in Lady Bulldogs' comeback win
Sandpoint 19, Lewiston 8
RATHDRUM — Giving up seven runs in one inning is never easy, but with the hard-hitting lineup that Sandpoint has, anything is possible.
Sophomore Marlee Stevens went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, and an RBI single as the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs responded with a 14-run third inning — the most runs they've scored in an inning all year — as they hit their way past the No. 2 Lady Bengals in a 5A District 1-2 loser-out game held Friday at Lakeland High.
Stevens was also a force to be reckoned with on the rubber, firing in 97 of her 157 pitches for strikes as she struck out double-digit batters (10) for the third time this season and reached the 150th career strikeout milestone in the process.
In the third, senior Arah Stevens, who had three hits in total, and sophomore Avery Inge, who also had a multi-hit effort, hit RBI singles and junior Teagan Newsom contributed a sacrifice fly to close the Sandpoint deficit to 7-4. With two outs in the inning, the Lady Bulldogs then did the unthinkable, rallying for 11 runs as they reached base in 11 consecutive plate appearances. Newsom and sophomores Bailey Pierson and Taylor Bannick, who also put together a three-hit effort, chipped in RBI singles while Stevens launched a three-run home run to center field and senior Cadence Skibitsky smashed a two-run home run of her own — the fifth homer of her career — during the two-out explosion as Sandpoint took a 15-7 lead. Marlee Stevens then sealed the deal with a two-run shot to deep right field in the seventh frame.
Corrina Scoville hit a solo home run and Laila Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBIs for Lewiston, which finished the season with a record of 7-14. The Lady Bengals were the only team to grab a victory over No. 1 Lakeland during the regular season, defeating the Lady Hawks by a score of 13-11 on April 28.
Sophomore Raelyn Olsen stole two bases and crossed the plate three times for Sandpoint, which outhit Lewiston 19-10, with the 19 hits being the most the Lady Bulldogs have recorded in a single game this season.

Sandpoint falls short of Lakeland in district championship game
Lakeland 6, Sandpoint 0
RATHDRUM — Sophomore Marlee Stevens whiffed nine more batters over six innings of work in the circle and had one of Sandpoint's three hits in the contest as the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs were shut out by the No. 1 Lady Hawks in the 5A District 1-2 Championship game held Friday night at Lakeland High.
Junior Teagan Newsom and sophomore Raelyn Olsen also singled for Sandpoint, which loaded the bases in the sixth inning with just one out, but weren't able to bring a run home. The Lady Bulldogs had just turned a double play to end the fifth when senior Cadence Skibitsky, playing center field, caught a line drive and threw out a runner attempting to advance to second base.
Abby Helmholz struck out seven batters over seven three-hit innings on the rubber and Raygen Dutton mashed a two-run home run for Lakeland, which scored five of their six runs between the fourth and fifth innings. The Lady Hawks recaptured the district title for the first time since 2022 with the victory.
Sandpoint, ineligible for further postseason contention due to the league only having one bid to state, finished the season with a record of 10-14.
