Go West, young man; Kyle West to be exact.

The freshman Wolfpack sprinter claimed the 100-meter victory and anchored Glacier’s winning relay teams Saturday at the Archie Roe Classic at Legends Stadium.

The Wolfpack relay overcame a slow final exchange to edge past Bigfork with a winning time of 42.61 seconds. The Vikings’ 42.67 time was the fifth fastest time in the state and fastest among Class A teams.

“The handoffs were clean, and in the end, I feel like I was a little slow, but we were able to get the win,” West said. “I felt good in the 100. I had a good start and reached the floating stage well. Got the win so that was nice.”

The Wolfpack long relay finished in 3:27.76 to win, giving them the fifth-best AA time this season.

West ran an 11.21 to take the win in the 100 ahead of Florence’s Logan Williams.

West added second place in the 200, just .03 behind Bigfork’s Tayden West, who won in 22.92.

Glacier used West’s performance plus a great team showing to take both team titles Saturday.

The Wolfpack boys finished with 147 points; Bigfork was second with 77.5. Hellgate was third at 59 points, Columbia Falls (56.5) and Flathead (44.5) rounded out the top five.

Glacier’s girls tallied 110 points to win over Flathead (77.5). Columbia Falls rounded out the podium at 57.5 points with Hellgate (49) and Fort Benton (44) following.

Bigfork’s Robert Merchant showed out again, anchoring the Vikings’ short relay team and then notching a personal best in the 400 within 15 minutes of each other.

“When I got in the box I said, ‘I don’t know if I can run this,’ “ Merchant said. “My legs were so dead. I came out way slower than I wanted to. I like to come out pretty hard, but I guess I had a lot in the tank for the last 200 and I just gave it everything.”

His 48.82 is good for the second-best time in the state among all classes — only Flathead’s Will Hollensteiner has gone faster — and top of Class A.

Bigfork also got a trio of field event wins from Tamret Savik, who set a personal best in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches. Savik also won the long jump and triple jump.

Glacier’s boys found seven event wins on the day, including both relays.

Owen Thiel added two victories for the Wolfpack, racing away in the 800 at 1:56.34, before grabbing the 3,200 victory to round out his day.

Liam Palmer swept the hurdles races, setting a personal best 40.20 in the 300, good for third in AA.

The Flathead boys did not win an event Saturday, but Christopher Holland and Brodyn DeShaw had a 2-3 finish in the 1,600 behind Harlem’s Ethan Walker.

One of the best races of the day came in the girls 1,600 as Glacier’s Lauren Bissen and Libby’s Capri Farmer dueled. Farmer passed Bissen on the final lap and pulled away to win in 5:07.24, a personal best for the Logger sophomore.

“I wanted to go for 76’s and I was following Lauren, I allowed her to lead it out because it was windy, so I made her do all the work,” Farmer said. “On the fourth lap I passed her, I just went and ended in 71 seconds, so I negative split by five seconds.”

Bissen’s 5:11.40 was her season best.

The wind kept times a bit higher, as no meet records were set on the track.

“It’s harder to keep your form together (in the wind),” Farmer said. “You can just feel the wind in your face and that can make it harder to breathe, but it’s nice when you get the tail wind, so it evens out a bit.”

Flathead’s Bristol Lenz powered through the wind for her first 300 hurdles race in two seasons, finishing fourth in 47.20. Glacier’s Addison Brisendine nosed ahead of Cut Bank’s Jaycee Luse by .01 to win at 46.61. Brisendine’s time is good for fourth in AA.

Lenz added a second in the 100 hurdles, finishing behind Florence’s Madigan Hurlbert.

“I had a really good start, but the girl in the lane next to me hit me a few times. It was just unfortunate, but it got me fired up towards the end,” Lenz said. “I fought for the finish but didn’t win. It was kind of disappointing, but sometimes you just have those days.”

The Bravettes found a 1-2 in the triple jump with Anna Bain setting a personal best at 34-4 to win. Alice Dolezal followed at 34-1 and Glacier’s Rachel Brannan was third at 34-0.5.

Glacier also found wins on the track in the 400 with Clara Ahner and 800 with Ada Thiel.

Remi Osler won the Javelin for the Wolfpack with a throw of 119-6.

Millie Hall nabbed a win in the shot put with a personal best toss of 37-5, she added a second in the discus with another personal best at 115-9. Missoula Hellgate’s Brooklen Kopp won at 122-2.

Soli Bullemer of Columbia Falls won the pole vault, topping 11-0.
