Kay Stenberg Smith, 97, was born Aug. 15, 1928, and passed March 29, 2026, in Kalispell.

She lived a very long life and was a much-loved mother of five, with husband Darrell Smith. After Darrell passed, she married Robert Sagen.

She was born in Malta into a family of nine siblings, who were all raised on a farm in Creston. Kay and Darrell met and married in Spokane, Washington, and moved to Whitefish, where they raised their family for 25 years.

She worked at Whitefish Hospital as a cook. She was involved in 4-H as a cooking instructor. Through 4-H, many kids, including all her children, entered sewing and cooking projects at the Kalispell Fair, along with animal categories, assisted by Darrell.

Kay is survived by three of her daughters, three of her siblings, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Glacier Memorial Garden. If you would like to come celebrate her life, her many accomplishments, and share memories of her and the family, please join us.
