McCALL — Two weeks ago, the Coeur d’Alene softball team was undefeated.
Three losses later, the Vikings’ season is over.
Coeur d’Alene led midway through the game, then rallied late, but fell to the Mountain View Mavericks of Meridian 8-7 in a state 6A play-in game Saturday at McCall-Donnelly High.
Coeur d’Alene, ranked second in 6A by MaxPreps, finished 18-3. The Vikings were bidding for their fifth straight trip to state.
Mountain View (15-8), ranked sixth, advances to state this Thursday through Saturday at Coeur d’Alene and Lake City high schools. The Mavericks will likely learn their first-round opponent today, after the MaxPreps ranking are used to seed the state tournaments.
Freshman Savannah Stevens hit a three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to pull the Vikings within a run with nobody out. Coeur d’Alene got a runner on, but a double play ended the game.
Jenna Davenport’s homer put the Vikings up 3-1 in the fifth, and an RBI single by Stevens made it 4-1.
Ali Knowles of Mountain View, a College of Idaho signee and daughter of former Lake City High athlete and coach and former Sandpoint High athletic director Kris Knowles, tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
Three batters later, sophomore Pyper Manire hit a grand slam to give the Mavericks the lead.
Senior Abbey Linder finished 3 for 4 with two runs scored for Coeur d'Alene.

Junior Emilia Landon went 3 for 4 with an RBI single in the sixth inning and a run scored for Timberlake.
