Bigfork's boys track team snagged second place Saturday at the competitive Archie Roe Classic at Legends Stadium in Kalispell.
The Vikings’ 42.67 time in the 400 relay was the fifth fastest time in the state and fastest among Class A teams.
The Wolfpack boys finished in first with 147 points; Bigfork was second with 77.5. Hellgate was third at 59 points, Columbia Falls (56.5) and Flathead (44.5) rounded out the top five.
Glacier’s girls tallied 110 points to win over Flathead (77.5). Columbia Falls rounded out the podium at 57.5 points with Hellgate (49) and Fort Benton (44) following.
Bigfork’s Robert Merchant showed out again, anchoring the Vikings’ short relay team and then notching a personal best in the 400 within 15 minutes of each other.
“When I got in the box I said, ‘I don’t know if I can run this,’ “ Merchant said. “My legs were so dead. I came out way slower than I wanted to. I like to come out pretty hard, but I guess I had a lot in the tank for the last 200 and I just gave it everything.”
His 48.82 is good for the second-best time in the state among all classes — only Flathead’s Will Hollensteiner has gone faster — and top of Class A.
Bigfork also got a trio of field event wins from Tamret Savik, who set a personal best in the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches. Savik also won the long jump and triple jump.
The wind kept times a bit higher, as no meet records were set on the track.
