Joseph "Smokin’ Joe" Albert Legris, 72, passed away peacefully at his home on March 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on Dec. 5, 1953, in Kankakee, Illinois, Joseph graduated from Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School in 1972. As a young man, he fell in love with Whitefish during a cross-country motorcycle trip and made it his home for the next 52 years.

Joseph owned and operated his vending business for roughly 40 years, in the Flathead Valley. He was known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit and his willingness to always lend a hand to anyone in need.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he cared deeply about his community. He was often involved in fundraisers, benefit events and fishing derbies for those in need. Joseph loved people of all ages and all walks of life, and he had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. He never met a stranger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Rita Legris, and his brother, Rick Legris.

He is survived by his son, Joe (Tiffany) Drazy; daughters, Aimee Legris and Lisa (Seth) Macalister; his sister, Toni (Tim) Keegan; brother, Paul (Kathy) Legris; sister, Mary (Todd) Brandehoff; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at the Whitefish VFW on June 20 at 2 p.m. A second gathering will be held at the Bradley American Legion at a later date, per Joseph’s wishes.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Joseph by sharing a story, offering kindness, or simply giving a smile to someone who may need it. Donations in his memory may also be made to the Canyon Kids Christmas Fund.
