Trails rerouted as fuels reduction work begins on Big Mountain
The Whitefish Pilot | Whitefish Pilot | UPDATED 2 days, 1 hour AGO
Whitefish Mountain Resort and the U.S. Forest Service are undertaking a fuels reduction project across more than 200 acres of Big Mountain terrain. This work will take place in phases and involves felling trees and clearing vegetation to reduce wildfire risk and protect resort infrastructure.
Currently, the first phase of work is underway in a wide swath of terrain from the Chair 1 corridor to the Corkscrew ski run. Closures for this phase include the Danny On Memorial Trail and the Toni Matt ski run, which is closed to all foot traffic.
Trees are being felled and heavy machinery will be operating in the orange areas of the map. These activities present significant danger to those who enter closed terrain.
The Danny On Memorial Trail has been rerouted to accommodate the closure. Signs direct hikers from the lift plaza. Visitors should heed all signage and check Whitefish Mountain Resort’s website for trail updates.
