Vandalism to campaign signs reported

Mineral County Sheriff Ryan Funke reports that damage to political signs has escalated recently, including to some of his own campaign materials.
“People physically and purposely drive over mine through private property. They destroyed three T posts and two $71 signs that were only two days old. It’s frustrating that people are violating individuals First Amendment rights by destroying signs and trespassing on their properties.”
Unauthorized citizen removal of illegally placed signs is prohibited, as is vandalism.
“Mineral County is a hard-working community comprised of individuals with their own personal beliefs and ideals. I respect that immensely,” said Ben Banks, candidate for Mineral County sheriff. “When individuals contribute to a political campaign of their choosing, they are contributing their hard-earned dollars for yard signs, banners and so on. When someone vandalizes or destroys a sign or banner, it is far more than political dissension, it's disrespect toward your neighbor. That has no place in Mineral County.
"During my time running for sheriff, the experience cemented my notion that Mineral County's greatest resource is its residents. As a community, we need to respect each other's opinions and property, and embrace the acceptance of differences, because that is what has helped create our amazing community and country.”
Funke said that violators face charges of criminal mischief, theft and trespassing when caught.
Video surveillance cameras have recoded vehicles and individuals in the act of destroying signs which are being investigated.
