St. Ignatius Fire Chief Paul Adams was recognized at the most recent council meeting, Tuesday, May 5, for being selected as the Montana American Legion Firefighter of the Year.
Waco Merchant, the Sergeant of Arms for the American Legion Post in St. Ignatius, nominated Adams and presented him with a plaque during the meeting. Merchant explained that the application for this prestigious award is sent to all local American Legion chapters in Montana.
The nomination requires an application and three letters of recommendation, which Adams received from Merchant, Mayor Daren Incashola and firefighter Lt. Ray McGonigle. Merchant said this recognition highlights Adams’ exemplary service, professionalism, and dedication to the safety and well-being of the community.
“We are here to recognize a man who represents the very best of service, leadership and commitment to community,” Merchant said. “This award isn't about showing up when it's convenient. It's about answering the call every time. It's about leadership when things get tough, calm under pressure and relentless commitment to the protection of others.”
Merchant added that firefighting isn’t just a job, but a responsibility and a sacrifice, which Adams carries out with integrity and strength. With the award, $500 is donated to the local firehouse or a charity of Adam’s choice.
“Because of leaders like him, our communities are safer, stronger and better prepared,” Merchant said.
