Bonner County Daily Bee | UPDATED 1 hour, 24 minutes AGO
Shelby Elaine Huyck, 80, passed away peacefully from heart failure April 28, 2026, in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Cedar Hills Church in Kootenai, Idaho. Founding Pastor Eric Rust will officiate, and everyone is invited to attend.
Shelby was born Aug. 10, 1945, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Charles R. and Frances M. (Rich) Newell. Raised in the Buffalo suburb of Kenmore, she attended school there and graduated from Kenmore West Senior High School in 1963. Following a brief time in nursing school, she worked for the telephone company and a contact lens company.
In 1966, she married Bob Huyck, her high school sweetheart, and they relocated to Maryland for Bob’s work. Over time, several families moved from Kenmore to Maryland, forming a close-knit group of lifelong friends.
In the early 1980s, they welcomed two sons, Robert and Jonathan. Shelby became a devoted soccer mom, scout mom, and, to her family, the best mom in the world. She enjoyed taking her sons to Buffalo to visit family while Bob traveled for business.
In 1993, the family relocated to Sandpoint, Idaho, to be near her sister, Trish Thurston, and her mother. Shelby cherished North Idaho — the mountains, the lake, and their sailboat. She also loved visiting her sons when they lived in Portland and spending time on the Oregon coast with her family and shih tzu, Max.
Shelby worked as a bookkeeper for several small businesses and volunteered at the Bonner General Hospital gift shop, later becoming an employee in May 2002. She was known as the “beauty of the gift shop,” bringing warmth, creativity and joy to customers and coworkers alike.
She was a “Spouse” member of Sandpoint Elks Lodge No. 1376 and actively supported her husband during his leadership roles, traveling to state and national events.
A proud patriot, Shelby was an active member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lt. George Farragut Chapter in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she held several leadership positions, including Chapter Regent and Vice Regent.
She was a devout Christian and member of Cedar Hills Church, deeply rooted in her faith. Shelby loved life, had a wonderful sense of humor, and encouraged others to believe they were never alone.
She enjoyed gardening, journaling and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Bob Huyck of Sandpoint; two sons, Rob and Jonathan Huyck of Sandpoint; her sister, Trish (Bob) Thurston of Sandpoint; two brothers, Jamie (Kathy) Newell of Littleton, Colo., and Michael (Kathryn) Newell of Hackensack, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Convoy of Hope, Cedar Hills Church, 941 McGhee Rd., Sandpoint, ID 83864.
