STATE 3A SOFTBALL: Kellogg bows out in two

SPIRIT LAKE — Sixth seed Kellogg took a three-run lead into the sixth inning before the seventh-seeded North Fremont Huskies tied the game, then scored twice in the eighth and eliminated the Wildcats 6-4 at the state 3A softball tournament at Timberlake High. 

In its first trip to state since 2002, Kellogg lost both games in extra innings, and finished 16-6.

Malena Munoz tripled and doubled, and she and Ella Kunze each went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Kellogg. Munoz hit an RBI triple in the third, and scored on Kunze’s single, boosting the Wildcats’ lead to 4-1. 

Daisy Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give North Fremont the lead for good. 

Joci Lee struck out seven and walked four for Kellogg, which won its first district title since 2010. 

Peyton Lenz fanned nine and walked none for North Fremont.
