STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Your newest golden girls (and guys) ... Lakeland girls 4x200 relay, thrower Robbins, Charter's Oyler win titles on first day of state meets

Out of the starting blocks, the goal was simple.

Beat Moscow.

As it turned out, Lakeland just beat everyone instead.

Lakeland’s 4x200-meter girls relay team of freshman Ashlyn Karle, sophomore Casey Foster, freshman Ruby Kindy and freshman Tessa Lovell won the race in 1 minute, 43.66 seconds, breaking the school record for the third straight meet at the state 5A track and field meet at Mountain View High in Meridian on Friday.

“All I thought about was passing Moscow,” said Karle, who runs the first leg. “That was our biggest goal after catching up to the stagger was getting past them."

When Foster got the baton next, both Blackfoot and Moscow were right on her heels.

“It was pretty close,” Foster said. “As soon as I passed it off, we just kind of dominated.”

Blackfoot was second in 1:44.05, followed by Moscow in 1:44.21.

“I think us being state champions, we know we’re champions, but don’t quite understand the meaning of it yet,” Foster said. “This is our first state meet, and for some of us, it was our first event.”

5A: Lakeland junior Jackie Robbins won the girls shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 1 ½ inches, winning by nearly 5 feet.

Wood River leads the boys meet with 28 points. Skyview of Nampa leads the girls meet with 26 points, followed by Moscow with 25 points and Lakeland in fourth with 20.

6A: At Mountain View High, Coeur d’Alene’s 4x800 boys relay team of sophomore Wyatt Morgenstern, Rowan Henry, junior Wyatt Carr and Mitchell Rietze won in 7:49.23, winning by just over 3 seconds.

Carr was also third in the 1,600 (4:14.16) for the Vikings, who are tied for sixth with 15 points.

Coeur d’Alene freshman Anna Christman was third in the 1,600 (5:04.13) and sophomore Molly Carroll eighth in the javelin (99-10) for the Viking girls, who are 12th.

Lake City junior Courtney Johnson, on her final throw, finished fourth in the shot put at 38-3 ½.

“To see her come through when she had to have it, it was awesome,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “She did a great job today.”

Mountain View of Meridian leads the boys meet with 37 points. Capital of Boise leads the girls meet with 42 points.

4A: When others wanted to push the pace in the 4A girls 3,200-meter run, Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Helen Oyler just ran her race.

At the end of it, it was exactly that, hers.

Oyler, who signed to run cross country and track and field at Spokane Colleges earlier this month, won the race in 11 minutes, 22.88 seconds, nearly 4 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

“She went out faster than she wanted to,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Chris Patterson said. “Other girls were trying to push the pace and going for a 5:41 mile. But Helen was able to keep a good pace.”

Oyler, who will compete in three more finals today — the 800, 1,600 and 4x400 relay — spent the offseason working on her speed, according to Patterson.

“We’ve been working on her running form,” Patterson said. “And she looks super strong right now. She really doesn’t look like a distance runner and is just really strong. She wanted to put the time in, and it’s worked out really well for her.”

Timberlake’s girls sprint medley team of sophomore Sierra Nalen, senior Amarijana Olivieri, junior Emily Wright and sophomore Adelynn Archer finished second in 1:52.03.

Timberlake’s sprint medley boys team of sophomore Waylin MacArthur, junior Weston Herbert, senior Joshua Yeager and junior Jonathan Barnhart was fifth in 3:40.75. Junior Caleb Royce was sixth in the 3,200 for Timberlake, which is eighth after the first day.

McCall-Donnelly leads the boys meet with 27 points. Weiser leads the girls with 13 points, followed by Coeur d’Alene Charter with 11 points.

3A: At Middleton High, St. Maries senior Jordan (JJ) Yearout was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 146 feet.

Kellogg junior Davin Harju was runner-up in the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches.

Malad leads the boys meet with 24.5 points.

Nampa Christian and Parma are tied in the girls meet with 14 points.
