Michael Eugene Watson, 72, of Whitefish, passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 5, 2026. He was born in Whitefish on Feb. 21, 1954, to Bob and Jean Watson.
He grew up in Olney near the mill owned by his grandfather. Here, he developed his incredible work ethic through hard physical labor and mechanics. Following his parents' divorce, he moved into town, where he lived with his mother and stepfather, Gordy DeVall.
Mike cherished the great memories he made hunting and fishing with Gordy and his siblings and enjoyed spending time with his friends at Gordy’s diner. While in high school, he met his sweetheart, Karen Voigt. Their commitment was evident early on when Mike, after a snow machine adventure left him with a broken foot and arm, still managed to take Karen to prom. They married in 1975 and welcomed two sons, Cody (1978) and Kiley (1980).
Seeking further adventure, the family moved to Fairbanks, Alaska. There, Mike spent many years driving truck on the famed "haul road" — the 500-mile dirt stretch from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. He was exceptionally proud of this work and often told stories of this time.
In Alaska, Mike was an active coach and supporter as his sons became hockey players and motorcycle racers. The family shared many unique hunting and fishing experiences together.
After both boys finished school, Mike and Karen returned to Montana. Never one to sit still, Mike soon started Watson Excavating with his son, Cody. The business thrived, growing to include both sons and many other relatives and friends. Mike was a mentor to many young men throughout his career and enjoyed sharing all he knew with anyone willing to learn.
In his last few years, he began to slow down and prioritize spending time with his grandchildren, working hard to build a family cabin in Rexford for them to always enjoy.
Mike is survived by his wife, Karen; siblings, Gary, Henry and Tana; sons, Cody (Jennifer) and Kiley (Crissy); and grandchildren, Victoria, Isabelle, Wyatt and Madison.
A celebration of life will be held Aug. 8 at their home in Whitefish.
