STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Working as one for the bigger one

It was a race strategy that you’d see in October at a cross country meet.
But it sure paid off again for Coeur d’Alene High in May.
With some competitors in the 3,200-meter run coming off the 800 less than two hours earlier, Coeur d’Alene junior Wyatt Carr and sophomore teammate Rowan Henry saw an opportunity, and acted on it.
“The plan was for Rowan and I to trade laps and make the pace honest,” Carr said. “We knew we had to break them.”
Carr, who was second at the state cross country meet in November, won the 3,200 in 9 minutes, 12.27 seconds, with Henry finishing third in 9:19.48 at the state 6A track and field meet at Mountain View HIgh in Meridian on Saturday. Henry was third at state cross country in November.
“That’s the beauty of training every day with those guys,” Carr said. “Being able to carry that cross country aspect over to track. We just worked together, and it felt a lot like cross country today.”
On Saturday, Carr pulled ahead of Centennial senior Drew Donahue in the final 250 meters for the title.
“He took the lead on me about 400 meters out,” Carr said. “I pulled away in the last 250 and really just enjoyed the last 10 meters.”
Carr claimed his first title of the weekend on Friday as part of the Vikings' 4x800 relay team along with sophomores Wyatt Morgenstern and Henry, and senior Mitchell Rietze.
“It was an awesome race,” Carr said of the relay. “It’s been four years in the making and we really wanted that one. All of us ran PRs, and it was awesome to see Mitch cross the finish line. We definitely enjoyed that one.”
Rietze was second in the 800 (1:54.39), senior Camden Johnson sixth in the 300 hurdles (39.77), junior Gavin Beckenhauer sixth in the shot put (48-1 ½) for Coeur d’Alene’s boys, who finished seventh with 49 points.
Lake City’s 4x100 boys relay team of juniors Chase Young, Paul Karvonen, Dylan Mason and Caden Tony was fourth in 42.44 seconds. Tony was fifth in the 100 (11.08), Young eighth (11.24) for the Timberwolves.
Post Falls senior Jaxon Lysne was fifth in the triple jump (42-7 ¾) and sophomore Landon Goodwin was third in the javelin 157-7.
Coeur d’Alene freshman Anna Christman was third (10:53.03) and senior Dakota Keyworth fifth (11:08.03) in the 3,200, and freshman Alexis Hoss fourth in the 300 hurdles (45.86) and fifth in the 100 hurdles (15.49) for the Viking girls.
Post Falls sophomore Annabelle Tucker was third in the 300 hurdles in 45.83 seconds.
Host Mountain View swept team titles for the second straight year.
5A: Sandpoint’s boys, behind individual champions Maverick Gomez (100) and sophomore Hayden Peterson (javelin), won the program’s first boys state title since 2003, finishing with 78 points in the state 5A meet, also at Mountain View High in Meridian.
Gomez, a senior, also was part of the Bulldogs’ winning 4x100 relay along with junior Trey Blumenberg and seniors Kamren Ziarnick and Isaac Schmit that won in 41.47 seconds. Gomez was also second in the 200 (21.61).
Elizabeth Storms of Sandpoint won the girls 800 in 2:16.94. Ella Howard of Sandpoint was third in the 100 hurdles.
Lakeland senior Brayden Carrel was third in the shot put (52 feet, 6 inches). The Hawks were fourth in the 4x100 relay.
Paul Kent of Sandpoint was third in the 3,200 (9:35.17), and teammate Kai Budensiek was fourth (9:37.58). Clayton Ernst of Sandpoint was fourth in the triple jump (42-7 ¼), Wyatt Neal fifth in the pole vault (13 feet).
Lakeland junior Sapphire Ruelle, who won the 100 and 200 as a sophomore, finished runner-up in both events Saturday as the Hawks finished second with 85 points.
It is the program’s highest finish at state since winning the state 3A title in 2002.
Lakeland’s girls were second in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
Karstyn Kiefer of the Hawks was second in the 300 hurdles, junior Jackie Robbins second in the discus, freshman Ashlyn Karle was fourth in the 100 and Tessa Lovell sixth in the 400.
Moscow won its second straight girls title with 130 points.
4A: To get to the podium, Coeur d’Alene Charter senior Annabelle Carr knew she’d need a little help from her friends.
And boy, did they deliver.
Carr claimed a fourth straight state title in the 800 (2:13.17), won her first in the 400 (58.29) and closed her high school career with a title in the 4x400 relay in 3:59.35, helping the Panthers finish runner-up with 90 points.
“It was quite the day,” Carr said. “I’d never quite done anything like this before with four finals on the same day with the 400, 800, 1,600 and 4x400 relay. “It was weird to have four finals on the same day, and I’ve had some leg injury stuff and haven’t been able to train as well as I’d like. I’ve had to go to the pool and do more light workouts, and just did what I could to recover in between events.”
Carr, along with freshman Brielle Meine and seniors Reagan Meine and Helen Oyler, made up the 4x400 relay team.
“We really wanted the record, but the wind was something else,” Carr said. “It was bad. But getting to run with that group one last time and pray at the start line with that team, it was awesome.”
Meine won the 300-meter hurdles in 43.92 and second in the 100 hurdles. Oyler captured the 1,600 on Saturday after winning the 3,200 on Friday and was second in the 800.
“All glory to God,” said Carr, who has signed with Oregon. “He really carried me through all my injuries and gave me the strength to compete today.”
Timberlake junior Jonathan Barnhart repeated as the state 4A champion in the 800 in 1:54.92 and also finished seventh in the 400 (51.78).
Caleb Royce was sixth in the 1,600 and Archer Higgins sixth in the shot put for Timberlake.
Addie Archer was second in the 200, third in the 400 and fifth in the 100 and 200 and Lillee Ward third in the high jump.
Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Emmaline Carr was sixth in the 400.
Kimberly swept team titles. The Bulldogs also won last year’s girls title.
3A: After finishing fourth at state in the 110-meter hurdles last year, St. Maries senior Isaiah Gustaffe got right back to work.
Day, night, weekends, whenever.
Gustaffe capped his high school career, winning the event in 14.85 seconds Saturday at Middleton High.
“I spent a lot of time working on my form during the indoor season, because it was a little wonky,” Gustaffe said. “My teammates are all a lot faster than me, so having those workouts really helped me daily as well.”
Gustaffe, who helped the Lumberjacks win state in boys basketball in March, was also third in the 300 hurdles in 40.00 seconds.
“Both of those were special,” Gustaffe said of the state titles. “This one feels nice though.”
Lumberjack sophomore Dimercia Spooner won the girls javelin (113-7) after finishing fourth as a freshman (100-11).
“I was more focused this year and had a goal in mind of throwing 120 (feet),” Spencer said. “There was a girl ahead of me, but I was throwing really well and surprised myself.”
Kellogg senior AJ Peak was second in the shot put (48 feet, 10 inches), followed by Priest River senior Niki Porinchok in third (48-6 ½). Porinchok was runner-up in the discus (174-5), followed by Peak (150-3).
Kellogg junior Davin Harju was second in the high jump (6-2). Kellogg freshman Laine Smith was second in the 300 hurdles (49.16).
Priest River senior Ian Lamanna was second in the pole vault (14-0) and long jump (21-0).
St. Maries junior Raevyn Yearout was third in the 200 (26.17) and fourth in the 100 (12.68) and 400 (1:01.71).
Nampa Christian swept team titles.
2A: Logos of Moscow swept team titles for the second straight year.
Westin Caven was fourth in the 300 hurdles and sixth in the 100 hurdles.
Kootenai’s Tyla Dittman was third in the pole vault.
