OSBURN — Silver Valley Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire Sunday morning involving a detached garage in the 1100 block of East Fir Avenue, according to Deputy Chief John Miller.

Emergency crews were notified of the blaze just before 10 a.m. and arrived to find the detached garage fully engulfed in flames, with significant exposure concerns. The nearby residence was about 2 feet from the garage, and a neighboring shop building about 5 feet away was beginning to off-gas from the intense heat.

Off-gassing is when a material releases gases, often vapors or fumes, usually due to heat, chemical reaction or decomposition. Off-gassing can pose significant hazards during a fire, as heated materials release flammable and potentially toxic vapors that can ignite, spread the fire or endanger firefighters and nearby occupants.

Firefighters also encountered a live electrical line down in the roadway, which, according to Miller, complicated apparatus placement and initial operations.

Additional resources, including a second engine and two ambulances, were dispatched to assist with suppression efforts. Crews worked to contain the fire, protect nearby residences and prevent further extension into the home. Despite those efforts, the fire spread into the eaves and attic space of the home.

Firefighters attacked the fire from multiple points, using both defensive and interior suppression tactics to stop its progression while safeguarding unaffected portions of the residence.

Miller also reported that several off-duty and volunteer personnel responded to aid the operations. Partner agencies assisting at the scene included the Mullan Volunteer Fire Department, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Osburn Police Department, Avista Utilities and McGillivray Environmental.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to all assisting agencies and responders for their professionalism, partnership and willingness to help,” Miller said. “The strength of our communities comes from working together, and we are proud to stand alongside our public safety partners in serving and protecting the people of Shoshone County.”

The detached garage was a total loss, and the home sustained significant damage to the living room and kitchen areas. Bedrooms sustained only minor damage and remained largely intact. No injuries were reported, including the resident’s three dogs, which were quickly moved from the home by a neighbor shortly after the blaze began.

“Incidents of this magnitude require a rapid and coordinated response from all available personnel,” Miller said. “During the fire, crews were also dispatched to a separate medical emergency, highlighting the ongoing challenge of balancing multiple emergencies with limited staffing resources. This incident serves as an important reminder of the value of regional cooperation and the importance of consolidation efforts aimed at maximizing emergency response capabilities throughout our communities.”

The Idaho State Fire Marshal’s Office will handle the investigation in accordance with Silver Valley Fire Rescue policies and procedures and will assist the homeowner.
