Shooting victim identified

The Flathead County Sheriff’s Department Monday released the identity of a man who was shot and killed at a Dawn Drive residence in rural Columbia Falls on May 11.

Two people were shot in the incident. The man who was killed is Donald J. Schwindt, 59, of Columbia Falls the department determined after an autopsy by the Montana State Crime Lab.

No charges have been filed and Flathead County Sheriff Brian Heino said the matter is still under investigation.

On May 11 Flathead County Sheriff’s Office and Columbia Falls Police Department responded to the 200 block of Dawn Drive about 7:09 a.m. for reports of gunfire, officials said. Investigators believe the two individuals involved in the confrontation exchanged fire. Both suffered gunshot wounds.
