A Coeur d'Alene homeschooled sixth grader is a quarterfinalist in the 2026 Jr. Ranger competition, a national initiative hosted by wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin to raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation and encourage kids to get outdoors.
The winner of the contest will receive $20,000 and a feature in Ranger Rick magazine, a publication dedicated to helping kids of all ages discover and connect with nature.
"I, David, love all the adventures that are possible in nature," David states on his jr-ranger.org profile. "There’s so many things to find and explore in nature. I love hiking and going off the path to find awesome sticks and animals. I love that I can swim, hike and sleep in such beautiful places. I feel free outside."
David loves fishing, swimming, camping and horses.
"I’ve done horse camp a few times and I love riding them," he said. "They are such beautiful and helpful animals. One of my dreams is to have my own horse."
As of Wednesday afternoon, David was in eighth place. Voting goes until 7 p.m. Thursday. The system is based on votes from individuals who have Facebook accounts. They can vote once per day and donate money for more votes. If David makes it into the next round, voting will continue.
