Whitefish tennis stacks victories, builds confidence ahead of Divisionals

The Whitefish tennis teams head to Divisionals on a high note after a busy week of impressive performances against Corvallis, Hamilton, Polson and Flathead.  

The Bulldogs girls downed the Broncs 5-0, before besting Corvallis 6-1. The Whitefish boys also took 7-0 victories over both teams.  

On Thursday, Liesl Brust and Emy Hansen each nabbed two victories as Whitefish swept Polson over a pair of duals at FVCC. 

The teams met Thursday at a neutral site after both scheduled duals during the season were rained out.  

On the boys side, Jack Oehlerich and Owen Erickson took two wins each to complete a near perfect day on the courts for the Bulldogs. 

Earlier in the week on Tuesday, Brust and Oehlerich led a near perfect day for Whitefish tennis as the Bulldogs swept Flathead at FVCC. Whitefish won both duals without dropping a set.  

“This is a great tune-up,” Whitefish girls coach Patrick Dryden said. “That is what every coach wants, you want your kids tested and you want them to play someone who is their equal or maybe a bit better.   

“The atmosphere is very relaxed and with divisionals and state coming in the next two weeks, those are not very relaxed.”  

Boys coach Chris Schwaderer said, “I feel like we have been very consistent, very business-like. 

“We are very deep. We have a lot of players who are really committed. It’s always fun to play the AA schools. We always enjoy the local rivalries.” 

Brust downed Allie Goff 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match. Ainsley Grubb and Daisy Lusko only dropped one set each in their wins.  

Camry Kelch and Allie Shors continued their hot season with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Nina Parris and Sienna Blanchard.  

On the boys side, Oehlerich stayed undefeated on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Flathead’s Rowen Alexander.  

“I went in with the mindset that I need to keep playing well. I can’t let off,” Oehlerich said. “Once you start letting off, you let your opponent get a couple of games. I just need to keep playing strong mentally.”  

Erickson added a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Bulldogs in singles, while the doubled pairs of Aaron Anderson and Marcus Mercer, and Cole Moses and Jake Shors also didn’t drop a game.
