LEGION BASEBALL: North Idaho Lakers bat past Prairie for season-opening sweep

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | May 21, 2026 12:30 PM

SANDPOINT — After the opening ceremony came to close, North Idaho Post 15 wasted no time getting on the scoreboard.

Priest River High rising junior Karsen Garvin recorded a two-run triple, Bonners Ferry High rising senior Kordale Burt belted an RBI double in the at-bat following, and the Lakers used a six-run first inning to down the Cardinals (White) in the first game of an American Legion Baseball doubleheader held Wednesday at War Memorial Field.

Bonners Ferry High rising sophomore Brent Worley chipped in an RBI single and Sandpoint's Emery Loosier registered a two-run single as North Idaho took the lead and never looked back. Noah Langlois went 2-for-4 with an RBI single of his own as the Lakers scored five more runs between the third and fourth innings to put the game out of reach.

On the mound, Sandpoint High rising sophomore Cy Marshall, after giving up two runs in the first frame, settled down and retired nine of the next 13 batters he faced, striking out six batters in the process. Worley tossed two no-hit relief innings and fanned three batters to close things out.

SANDPOINT — The hitting continued in game two.

Sandpoint's Wyatt Buday went 3-for-3 with a trio of singles, Sandpoint's Noah Langlois and Bonners Ferry High rising senior Kordale Burt tripled, and the Lakers outhit the Cardinals (White) by a 13-7 margin to complete the sweep during the nightcap of Wednesday's American Legion Baseball doubleheader at War Memorial Field.

Down 3-2 heading in the fifth inning, Sandpoint High rising sophomore Cy Marshall tallied an RBI single and Sandpoint's Emery Loosier scored on an error on the same play to give the Lakers a 4-3 advantage. Priest River High rising junior Karsen Garvin, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs in the contest, then hit an RBI single before Bonners Ferry High rising sophomore Brent Worley connected for a two-run base knock to push the lead to five runs.

North Idaho scored all five of their runs in the fifth with two outs. Cody Gutierrez hit an RBI single in sixth to cap off the night's scoring. Langlois kept Prairie's bats at bay, striking out five batters over four one-run innings of relief on the rubber.

"It's not everyday you got two wins over a team from Post Falls," North Idaho Lakers head coach Travis Tyler, who returned eight of his 14 players from last year's team, said. "The team has gelled amazingly... they battled back and collected key two-out hits all night."

Coach Tyler said he expects this year's squad to be competitive as they look to make a run for a district title and a state berth. The Lakers are playing in Idaho's ALB this year as opposed to Washington, which they competed in for the last two seasons.

"These boys are hungry and want to play ball," coach Tyler continued. "If we keep playing clean ball, keep the bats active, and play Laker baseball, we'll be in every game. They are going to do amazing things this summer."

Sandpoint High rising sophomore Gunnar Gustafson had an RBI single as well in the win for North Idaho (2-0), which is set to face Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls for a non-league game on June 1.
