Local middle schooler qualifies for Junior National Finals Rodeo

Full caption: Simona Villelli, an eighth grader at Sandpoint Middle School, beat out 33 other competitors with a time of 17.061 seconds to claim first in the KK Senior Barrel Racing competition, a part of the 7th Annual Hermiston Classic held May 15-17 at Farm City Pro Rodeo Arena. Villelli, riding Journey to Judgement, dominated the field, defeating the runner-up by .674 seconds. Villelli also participated in the KK Pole Bending competition, finishing 14th out of 24 competitors with a time of 23.029 seconds. Up next, the standout rodeo star will compete at the Junior National Finals Rodeo set to be held Dec. 8-12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center's Wrangler Rodeo Arena. The event hosts more than 700 contestants across a variety of competitions. More than $1 million in combined cash and prize payouts are up for grabs as they chase a coveted Montana Silversmiths championship buckle.
