May is Healthy Vision Month. As we age, some vision changes are normal, such as losing focus, difficulty distinguishing colors and needing more light to see well.

We are also at a higher risk of developing age-related eye diseases and conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. These diseases often have no symptoms in their early stages.

The only way to detect any of these conditions is a comprehensive dilated eye exam from an eye care professional. Even if you have no symptoms, early detection can save your sight.

Everyone over 50 should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam. To protect your vision, stop smoking, eat healthy and stay active. Smoking increases one’s risk for macular degeneration, cataracts and can harm the optic nerve.
