Memorial Day weekend is upon us, and Shoshone County has become a haven for those looking to get away — but not too far away.
Over the next few days, thousands are expected to make their way into the county, finding any open spot to pitch tents, park campers, and explore the surrounding hillsides.
Shoshone County Sheriff Shawn Wehr took to social media earlier this week to offer a brief public service announcement about what visitors can expect while recreating in the county.
“We know many of you will be heading to the rivers, trails, campgrounds, mountains, and communities throughout the county — including the North Fork, Moon Pass, Dobson Pass, Wallace, Kellogg, Pinehurst, Kingston, Mullan, and many other great outdoor areas that make Shoshone County such a special place to live and visit,” Wehr said. “You will see deputies out patrolling throughout the weekend. We’re not here to ruin anyone’s fun — we simply want everyone to have a great holiday weekend and make it home safely.”
Visitors should expect an increased law enforcement presence throughout the weekend, including in some of the county’s more remote areas. As outdoor recreation activity expands beyond main corridors and into backcountry locations, deputies will be patrolling those areas to ensure safety and respond quickly to any incidents.
Wehr outlined several safety reminders for those planning to spend the long weekend in the county, including urging people to be extra cautious near waterways; avoid drinking and driving; be patient as heavy traffic in and out of the county is expected on Friday and Sunday; be safe and responsible with any campfires; pack out any garbage associated with campsites; and not to go into the woods and hills without communicating where they are going.
Wehr also reminded the public that any first responders seen patrolling or responding to calls are working throughout the holiday weekend and should be treated with the utmost respect. He encouraged people to take a moment to reflect on the purpose of the holiday.
“We also want to thank all of the first responders, dispatchers, fire personnel, EMS crews, Search & Rescue volunteers, and public works employees who will be working throughout the holiday weekend to help keep our communities safe,” he said. “Please take time this Memorial Day to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy Memorial Day weekend.”
