Columbia Basin Herald | UPDATED 1 hour, 4 minutes AGO
Maria Perez, known to everyone as “Olga,” of Quincy, Washington, passed away on May 3, 2026, at the age of 81.
Olga was born on January 6, 1945, in Edinburg, Texas to Ramon and Maria “Jesusita” Garza. She grew up in Edinburg, and later her family moved to Indio, California. Olga had two brothers and three sisters. They all shared a special bond and love for one another and remained close throughout the years.
Olga and her family moved to Quincy, Washington, where she attended and graduated from Quincy High School.
Olga met her late husband Ricardo Perez while working. They later married and had two children together. They remained married until his death in 2011.
Olga dedicated her life to raising her two young children. In 1975, she went to work for the Quincy School District as a teacher's aide in the Special Education Department. She loved her job, but especially loved working with the students. Every Friday several lucky students were invited to join Mrs. Perez for lunch. Olga continued to work for the Quincy School District for many years.
Olga was born and raised a devout Catholic. Her love of the church kept her very busy after leaving her position with the school. She became a very active member in all aspects of the church. If she wasn’t serving in the kitchen, she was having rummage sales to help raise money for her local parish. Her claim to fame was the active role she took in the Mexican Fiesta every year. She worked tirelessly every year to create an annual event for the entire community while raising money for the church. She absolutely loved doing this. Service was Olga's favorite pastime. Olga often had her grandkids with her while at the church.
Olga exuded an outspoken spirit; she had a wonderful sense of humor but most of all a very loving and giving heart. Whether you knew her as the teacher's aide, the lady from the Church or Skyler’s Nana, there’s no denying that she was loved by so many. Everyone knew "Olga".
During her free time, Olga enjoyed preparing food, shopping, shopping yard sales with her husband and going to bingo and the casinos. But her favorite job and hobby was being a Nana to her grandkids. She spent countless hours with all of them, and she loved them so much. She was always talking about her grandkids and great-grandkids. She thought they were the greatest gift and blessing in her life. In her eyes, they were beautiful and perfect in every way. She was proud of each and every one of them and they were the light of her life.
Olga was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, nana and friend. She will be missed greatly.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ricardo Perez. She leaves behind her two children Velma and Eric and grandchildren Skyler (Olivia), Kaydren (Ruben), Ian (Jadyn), Zack (Valerie), Derek (Nikki), Kai, Paiten and Griffin. She also leaves behind her great-grandkids Oliver, Audrey, Eleanor and Daphne.
Olga's celebration of life will be held at St Pius X Catholic Church on June 12 at 11 a.m. A rosary will be held at 10 a.m. before the service. All who loved and knew Olga are invited.
