NO. 32132 Opportunity to Comment on Round Star Project Revised Environmental Assessment, Flathead National Forest, Tally Lake Ranger District (Flathead County) The Flathead National Forest, Tally Lake Ranger District, is seeking comments on the revised environmental assessment (EA) for the Round Star Project, located on National Forest System lands within Flathead County, MT, approximately 13 miles west of Whitefish, MT, extending from Round Meadows to the northwest part of Star Meadows.  The project includes activities designed to:  • Reduce tree densities and fuel loadings within the wildland-urban interface. • Improve the diversity and resilience of vegetative communities. • Contribute to continued timber production and economic sustainability.  • Enhance and expand high quality recreation opportunities in the Round Meadow area. A decision notice was signed by the Tally Lake District Ranger in April 2024. In 2025, a complaint was filed against the project in the United States District Court for the District of Montana alleging violations of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Healthy Forests Restoration Act (HFRA), National Forest Management Act (NFMA), Administrative Procedures Act (APA), and Endangered Species Act (ESA) (Case No. 9:25-cv-00005-KLD, D. Mont.). In a March 31, 2026 order, the court found that there were NFMA and NEPA violations, ordered project activities enjoined, and remanded the project to the Forest to address deficiencies. The 2024 Decision Notice was not vacated. In response to the court order, the Flathead National Forest has prepared a Revised EA to clarify the HFRA (16)(B) Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) delineation process and demonstrate compliance with the Forest Plan’s Lynx Amendment standards, and to consider effects related to the adjacent Cyclone Bill project.  The Round Star revised EA and supporting documents can be viewed on the Flathead National Forest’s project webpage at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r01/flathead/projects/archive/60892 or in the public Box folder at: https://usfs-public.box.com/s/cvnaib2t9mgvw6n974e0itnqeaedinml Opportunity to Comment:  Public comments will be accepted during the 30-day comment period. Comments will ONLY be considered on the new and revised information in the revised EA. A list of revisions is provided in the EA introduction to help readers understand the new information that is subject to comment. Specific written comments on the revised EA will be accepted for 30 calendar days following publication of this notice in the Daily Inter Lake. The publication date in the newspaper of record is the exclusive means for calculating the comment period and the regulations prohibit extension. It is the responsibility of persons providing comments to ensure timely submission. Comments submitted via mail must be postmarked by the end of the comment period. Names and contact information submitted with comments will become part of the public record and may be released under the Freedom of Information Act.  Submit comments electronically to [email protected] in rich text (.rtf), Word (.doc or .docx), or .pdf formats, with “Round Star Project” in the subject line. To submit via mail, send to U.S. Forest Service, Tally Lake Ranger District, Attn: Sarah Hash (Round Star Project), 650 Wolf Pack Way, Kalispell MT 59901, or hand-deliver to the Tally Lake Ranger District (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays).  The revised EA was completed under the under the Forest Service’s NEPA implementing regulations at 36 CFR 220, which were in place at the time the 2024 Decision Notice was signed. This project previously completed the pre-decisional administrative review (objections) process pursuant to 36 CFR 218, subparts A and B. If a subsequent administrative review process (objection period) is warranted pursuant to 36 CFR 218, only those who submit timely and specific written comments during this public comment period will be eligible to file an objection on new information. Commenters must either sign the comment or verify identity upon request. This project initiated public comment after the publication of the proposed amendment to the regulations at 36 CFR 218 in the Federal Register on February 6, 2026 (91 FR 5387). If an objection period is warranted, this project and the associated EA and FONSI may be subject to the revised administrative review process if the final 36 CFR 218 rule is published before the project’s objection period is initiated. Otherwise, this project would follow the administrative review process established prior to the proposed rule, if the process is needed. May 27, 2026 MNAXLP __________________________
