Flathead National Forest announces Rad Reid Blowdown Salvage Project
Whitefish Pilot | UPDATED 1 month, 2 weeks AGO
The Flathead National Forest today announced the Rad Reid Blowdown Salvage Project, located in the National Forest on the Tally Lake Ranger District.
The project aims to recover economic value from downed trees, reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire to protect values at risk within the wildland-urban interface and reestablish forested conditions to facilitate recovery.
Some of the blowdown areas are near Reid Divide and other areas are near Grouse Mountain.
The project proposes approximately 512 acres of active management, including commercial harvest and post-harvest fuel treatments to address stands of trees damaged by the windstorm.
The project is expected to be categorically excluded from documentation in an Environmental Assessment or Environmental Impact Statement. The project is anticipated to be authorized under Section 605 of the Healthy Forest Restoration Act.
The Rad Reid Blowdown Salvage project will use the emergency authorities authorized by the Secretary of Agriculture under Section 40807 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Please provide input on the proposal by June 15, 2026.
