Michael Gordon McEachern, 79
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 hour, 24 minutes AGO
Michael McEachern, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at home peacefully May 24, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished above all else. His love for them was steady, quiet and unwavering — the kind of love that shaped generations.
Born on March 9, 1947, Michael grew up in Coeur d’Alene, where he graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School. A Viking through and through, he left his mark as an extraordinary athlete. He was a baseball standout with the American Legion and a proud member of the 1963 state championship basketball team. In his prime, he was the kind of athlete people remembered — not very fast, but strong, and naturally gifted.
Michael served his country honorably in the United States Army, carrying himself with the same quiet strength that defined every part of his life.
An outdoorsman at heart, he found joy in the simple, timeless pursuits of golfing, hunting and fishing. He moved through the world with a calm presence, speaking little but saying much. And while he was quiet, he certainly wasn’t slow — especially behind the wheel of his beloved 1965 Firebird, where his need for speed became a family legend.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Bernie, and their daughters: Melissa Bunch, Krista Kaufman, Sara Shoen and son-in-law Andrew Shoen. He leaves behind grandchildren: Dylan Kaufman and Kenzie Figueroa, Brody and Hallie Kaufman, Quinton Bunch and Bella Lawson, Paxon Bunch, Parker Drechsel and Paige Drechsel; as well as great-grandchildren: Ava Kaufman, Gabby Bunch and Boone Kaufman — each one a testament to the love and legacy he built over a lifetime.
His life was rich with love, loyalty and the steady, enduring spirit of a man who lived fully and humbly. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
A visitation/viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2026, at Yates Funeral Home — Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
