Robert 'Bob' Moate, 99
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 hour, 24 minutes AGO
On Sunday, May 24, 2026, the world lost a rare gem of a man. Robert “Bob” Moate went to be with his Lord and Savior and join the love of his life, Marjorie “Marj” Moate, and other family members who had passed before him.
Bob was born May 19, 1927, to Thomas and Margaret (Meyers) Moate in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where he resided most of his life. He graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary High School in 1945. During his HS years, he was involved in activities and was captain of the football team. Immediately after high school, Bob went into the U.S. Army. He completed his basic training toward the end of World War II and was stationed in Korea.
Shortly after returning from Korea, Bob met Marjorie and they were married on May 1, 1949, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They were happily married for over 72 years until Marj passed away in 2022.
In 1955, Bob and his dad built a home on Fernan Lake where he and Marj raised their six children. Each of his kids has wonderful memories of growing up at the lake. Bob was always trying to keep his sons busy and teach them a solid work ethic, so he bought a boat rental business, “Moate’s Boats,” and ran it at the lake for several years.
Bob was a hardworking entrepreneur at heart. He owned and operated the Mobile Station on Seventh and Sherman for several years. Later, he worked for a local Creamery where he made many friends on his milk route. After 13 years at the creamery, his heart was called again to start his own business. So, in 1968, he and Marj purchased Custom Building and Supply. He turned it into a thriving, successful business that the next three generations of his family continue to own and operate.
No one loved the great outdoors as much as Bob. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, hunting and gardening. But mostly he will be remembered as a man of great integrity, faith and commitment who loved his family deeply. He was well respected by his family and friends, and everyone who knew him was blessed by his presence.
Bob is survived by his six children: Bob (Kathy) Moate, Terry (Allison) Moate, Randy (Dana) Moate, Janie (Craig) Paterson, Marian (Conrad) Underdahl, and Tom (Dawn) Moate; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Each of us is a better person because of having him in our lives. We want to thank him for showing that laughter is an important part of life, and that sometimes the simplest things can be the most precious and cherished. We will clearly miss his warm smile, words of encouragement, guidance and giving heart. His kids are so grateful to have been able to call him their dad.
There will be a rosary at 10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m., this Saturday, May 30, 2026, at St. Pius X Catholic Church (625 E. Haycraft Ave., Coeur d’Alene) with a reception to follow.
Yates Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements. Please visit Bob’s online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
