Coeur d'Alene artist exhibit at Terrain Gallery opens June 5

An interdisciplinary exhibition by conceptual Coeur d’Alene-based artist Duncan Clark Menzies will open June 5 at Terrain Gallery.
The show, "Catharsis," is a part of Menzies' ongoing project, "The Bedsheet Chronicles," proposing a journey from covering to discovery, as well as Coeur d’Alene-based videographer Jack Wade’s “A Sheet from Naked” art documentary about the project.
"Catharsis" examines the central question of Menzies’ work: "What do you cover?" Or, “What covers your worldview?” After spending time away traveling the last couple years and coming back to his hometown of Coeur d’Alene, Menzies gained a new perspective on the place where he grew up and was raised.
"It’s made me think about how my environment culturally, physically and socially shaped me," Menzies said in a news release.
Through a variety of mediums, the artist explores how landscapes — both physical and cultural — shape, hide or define a person's worldview. The exhibition will feature the premiere of the 18-minute documentary, "A Sheet from Naked."
“The creation of this film has been a continuous evolution of my own self inquiry, play, self-expression and curiosity," Wade said. "By Duncan uncovering his own story, I in turn found myself revealing more of myself to myself in the process.
The film explores the question: "What happens when we get naked?" Through the interactive "Bedsheet Chronicles," Menzies explores what it means to cover oneself from others, the world and even one's own self. The documentary will open June 5 with special showings at 5:20 p.m., 6:20 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. and as a continuous loop during normal exhibition hours.
"The Bedsheet Chronicles" is a personal and communal exploration of coverings. All fabric used in the project is donated by community members during "bedsheet interviews," where participants share their stories around “what they cover” and donate linens to the project.
Menzies is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist. His work intersects travel, community conversations, spirituality, Celtic heritage and identity, seeking to foster meaningful conversation and sacred introspection.
"Catharsis: The Bedsheet Chronicles" runs through June 28 at Terrain Gallery, 628 N. Monroe St., Spokane.
