BOCC to suggest change of commissioner chair

SANDPOINT — Following suit with an already established plan of action, the board of county commissioners is expected to make a change to their commission chair during Tuesday’s business meeting.
The board is expected to vote on appointing Commissioner Ron Korn to chair the board, a role that has been held by Commissioner Brian Domke since September 2025, and Commissioner Asia Williams before that.
Domke recommended in a Sept. 23 business meeting that the chair position should be elected every eight months, allowing the position to rotate between members of the board over the two-year board term.
He further said, along with Korn, that the rotation wasn’t based on performance, but equality for shared responsibility.
“I just want to state clearly that this is not anything personal when it comes to the performance of our current chairwoman. It's just a perspective that I personally hold when it comes to sharing responsibilities among the board. And I believe that there's a benefit to doing that,” Domke said during the September meeting.
Williams shared in September that she understood the idea behind the rotation but felt that a rotation period was already built into the system at the time of the board's reorganization period.
A BOCC memorandum for the upcoming business meeting, which directly quotes Domke from the September meeting, indicates that the chair position creates additional duties and responsibilities for the elected board member filling the role, where the chair position should be equal.
“Following through with this perspective, it is my opinion that the BOCC chair should now rotate to the District 3 commissioner,” read the memorandum.
The decision to rotate chairs stems from one of the first conversations the board had when Domke and Korn were sworn in to serve as commissioners. When initially choosing a chair for the board, Domke brought forth the idea of switching the chair in eight months, allowing each commissioner to share the responsibility over time.
“I see the chairperson of the board as being an additional level of responsibility that that person is taking on. The commissioners are equal — equal in authority — but that’s yet another responsibility, and so I believe over time it would be appropriate for the three members of this commission to share that responsibility,” said Domke during the January meeting.
