SANDPOINT — Local northern Idaho agencies released a press release reminding the community to follow local no wake zone laws and waterfront property owners to keep illegal buoys out of the water.  

The reminder is a collaboration between Bonner County Sheriff’s Office, Bonner County Parks & Waterways and the Idaho Department of Lands.  

Bonner County ordinance 3-105 was cited in the release, which prohibits boat wakes within 200 feet of any shoreline, dock, pier, bridge or other structure, or any person in the water, or within 50 feet of any other vessel.

“Operating a boat within 200 feet of shore, docks, or structures can increase the likelihood of damage to the shoreline and property. Large wakes also have the potential to injure people in the water or on a dock,” Lieutenant Douglas McGeachy said. “It is important that everyone operates their boats in a safe and responsible manner to avoid injuries or damage. Boat owners should also be reminded that they could be held civilly liable for damage caused by their wake.” 

According to the sheriff’s office, citations to boaters violating the wake zone may include a fine of $150 for the first offense and $300 for any violation after the first. 

While citizens may want to place buoys in the water to mark no wake areas, officials said that unpermitted buoys are illegal and may present a navigational hazard.  

Department of Land officials note that government entities are the only ones with legal authority to put buoys in place. Illegal placement of them may result in a notice of noncompliance, court injunction and penalties of up to $2,500.  

“Boaters and waterfront property owners are encouraged to comply with state and local regulations, which is ultimately the key to ensuring everyone can safely enjoy the county’s beautiful lakes and rivers,” officials said.
