55th Wedding Anniversary

Bob & Eileen Ickes

Eileen Schuler from Allentown, Penn., met Bob Ickes from Santa Cruz, Calif., in the late 1960s in Washington, D.C., where she was working as a nurse and he was in the U.S. Navy helping design nuclear attack submarine power plants.

When Bob finished his naval service commitment, they got married on June 5, 1971, then took the summer off driving and sightseeing across the country to California and spent a couple of months backpacking in the Sierra Nevada mountains. That fall they both got jobs. Eileen was the office nurse in a doctor’s private practice, and Bob went to work in manufacturing engineering and management for Hewlett-Packard Company in Palo Alto, Calif.

In 1979, they followed Bob’s job with HP to the Inland Empire, residing in Kootenai County outside of Post Falls, Idaho, while Bob worked at HP’s plant in Liberty Lake Wash. Eileen was a homemaker for years and then became a teacher’s aide, first in the local elementary schools, and later in the music department at NIC. Bob’s job with HP ended in 2001 and he retired.

Family includes the late Scott Ickes, Steve and Jessica Ickes of Redwood City, Calif., grandchildren Tyler Ickes of Schenectady, N.Y., and Keona and Kyden Ickes growing up in Redwood City.

Bob has always had an interest in boats, owning several (both power and sail) over the years. Presently much time is spent on their 1948 30’ Chris-Craft wooden cabin cruiser taking boat rides on Lake Coeur d’Alene.
