STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEETS: What a run! ... Coeur d'Alene boys, Timberlake boys claim team titles; Eggleston wins first individual girls title in Timberlake history
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 6 minutes AGO
POCATELLO — The plan was perfect.
But the execution on Saturday, that’s what was the difference for the Coeur d’Alene boys cross country team.
Senior Wyatt Carr, who has verbally committed to run at Syracuse next year, broke free of junior teammates Wyatt Morgenstern and Rowan Henry to win the state 6A cross country championship in a course record 15 minutes, 10.8 seconds at the Portneuf Wellness Complex on Saturday.
“I was just enjoying the last 400 yards,” said Carr, who is Coeur d’Alene’s first individual champion since Michael Armon in 2004. “Max (Cervi-Skinner, former Viking standout now running at Wake Forest) told me that if I’m ever in that position, to just smile and enjoy it no matter what. It was definitely a full-circle moment and I wanted to take everything in. I just wanted to enjoy it across the line.”
“I knew he wanted it, and I wanted it for him,” said third-year Coeur d’Alene coach Emry Carr, who is Wyatt’s dad. “I’m happy he got it. On the coaching side, I just wanted them to perform and execute. We’re in championship season, so this is where we needed to put it all together and they did that today.”
Morgenstern finished 10 seconds later, Henry seven seconds after that for the Vikings, who claimed a fourth straight state team title with 32 points. The Vikings also won in 2011. Their first title came in 2023 on the same course.
“We just wanted to execute our race plan to run and share the workload up front,” said Wyatt Carr, who was runner-up at state last year at Lewiston Orchards. “I’m just so proud of the guys. My sophomore year, we wanted to do a 1-2-3 at state, and just couldn’t get it done. Just seeing the guys pull through, I’m just super happy. They’ve put in the work year in and year out.”
Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler trusted Lola Eggleston throughout the season to compete at the highest of her capabilities.
Saturday, she might have saved her best for last, winning the state 4A girls race in 17:54.4, becoming the first individual female champion in school history.
“I just wanted to win and go sub-18 (minutes),” said Eggleston, who was third at state last year. “I was really happy with my time. It’s a little surreal to think about to be honest. I had such a tough track season, and just wanted to prove to myself that I could do this. Coming in with the top time, I didn’t want to guarantee or say it was going to happen. But it was amazing and I had such a great time in that race.”
It might have been 364 days later, but the Timberlake Tiger boys got the moment they’d waited on, with the program’s first state team title.
“We’ve only won three state titles on the boys side (in all sports) at Timberlake,” said Lawler, who started the program 22 years ago. “We’ve been runner-up and on the podium, but just never won it. They were in a good position a year ago (Timberlake was third at state in 2025), but just came up short. The level of intensity increased and we just had good senior leadership and chemistry with the boys team this year.”
Sandpoint junior Kai Budensiek was 10th, junior Hobbes Conley 12th, senior Jack Lovin 14th and Landon (Thor) Connor 19th to lead the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish in 5A, the program’s highest finish.
"The boys had an A race. We wanted four in the top 20 all-state, and we got that," Sandpoint coach Mike Ehredt said. "It's a fantastic group of kids who believe they can win everything. When you have that, there's an incredible commitment and dedication to that."
6A: Henry was third at state, Morgenstern sixth last year for Coeur d’Alene.
“This just felt special for all of us,” Henry said. “The older guys, they made a YouTube channel a few years ago and I was excited to watch those videos and someday be a part of that.”
Senior Gabriel Heule (10th) and junior Blaise Howard (17th) were also state medalists for Coeur d’Alene. The top 20 finishers earn medals.
“We wanted Gabe and Blaise to run together as well,” Emry Carr said. “Blaise has been dealing with some sickness and he ran phenomenally. Going into NXR (Nike Northwest Regionals on Nov. 21 at The Course Spokane Valley), our expectation is that the gap closes and we’re ready to compete with anyone in the region.”
Coeur d’Alene sophomore Victoria Howard was 11th, freshman Jordyn Coy 12th and junior Anna Christman 13th for the Viking girls, who finished sixth. The top four teams earn trophies.
“I really liked the course, even if it wasn’t as fast as I’d expected,” Howard said. “Coming into the race, we didn’t know how Anna was going to feel, so we’d planned to be around her and that helped. To be able to finish with her was great. I was really thankful for the opportunity because it worked out today.”
Christman had an iron infusion on Tuesday to help with an iron deficiency.
“It was not where I wanted to be, and I wasn’t having the best day because I was having problems getting oxygen to my legs," Christman said. "I kept hearing along the course that Tori (Howard) and Jordyn were right behind me, so that helped. We wanted to close the time gap, and we accomplished that. Even though I didn’t finish where I wanted, I was happy we were able to work together.”
Boise won the girls team title with 84 points.
Freshman Adalyn Bello of Eagle won the girls race in 17:57.5.
5A: Sandpoint freshman Olivia Betz was seventh, junior Delaney Barron 16th for the Bulldogs, who finished fourth with 105 points.
"For the girls, you know, to finish fifth last year, they were like, 'Oh, damn, we were really close.' And then that became their fuel for this year to be on the podium," Ehredt said. "For a while there during the season, I thought maybe on a special day, you know, better things might happen. But just to see how far they've come in two years is pretty special."
Lakeland sophomore Olivia Meredith was 20th.
Bishop Kelly won the girls team title with 68 points.
Skyline of Idaho Falls won the boys team title with 59 points.
Twin Falls senior Raelee Richardson won the girls race in 18:35.5 to repeat as champion.
Senior Ethan Hansen of Century High in Pocatello won the boys race in 15:11.9 for his second straight individual title.
4A: After having high expectations last year, Timberlake senior Caleb Royce just enjoyed the ride on Saturday.
Royce finished third, followed by senior Jonathan Barnhart in fifth, sophomore Eli Royce in 14th and junior Joseph Sateren in 15th for the Tigers, who finished with 49 points.
“I just saw Jonathan at the finish,” said Caleb Royce, who finished eighth last year. “I’m not really a math guy, so I let Chris (Perry, a teammate) do that and looking to see where everyone else was finishing at. I went into the race with less expectations than last year and just focused on putting my best effort in.”
Barnhart missed last week’s district championship race at The Course Spokane Valley with a hip pointer, but received a medical exemption to compete at state.
“I was mostly worried at the start that it was going to act up again,” Barnhart said. “I started off super slow and realized I couldn’t be scared. I was looking at Caleb and saw Adam (Willis of Sugar-Salem) was right by him, and thought, ‘what do I do here?’ Luckily, Caleb had a second wind and performed really well.”
Lawler has coached the Timberlake girls to state titles in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2025. The Tiger girls were sixth this year.
“It’s really awesome,” Barnhart said. “Coach Lawler has always wanted something like this. It felt good to prove him right and we were valuable enough and good enough to get it done for him.”
Lawler had also coached three previous individual boys champions Frank Lagrimanta (2005, 2006), Logan Hunt (2019) and Jacob Barnhart (2022).
“I told our boys it’s been 22 years since I started the program,” Lawler said. “I had doubts it would ever come, but I had no doubts they could bring it home.”
Eggleston’s time was the fastest female time in any classification on Saturday.
“She had some race day nerves like you’d expect,” Lawler said. “But I trusted her to run her race and everything just came together. Once she had an early lead, she was fantastic. It’s wild to think that that fastest girl in the state is from Spirit Lake. And to do it by yourself, it speaks volumes to the race she ran.”
Snake River won the girls title with 56 points.
Sugar-Salem junior Darrel Dickson won the boys race in 15:07.5.
3A: Nampa Christian (boys) and Malad (girls) won team titles.
Soda Springs freshman Anna Uskoski won the girls race in 19:20.4.
Senior John Harris of Sun Valley Community School won the boys race in 15:59.7.
2A: Victory Charter swept the team titles.
Freshman Ben Forsmann of Deary won the boys race in 16:59.
Senior Libby Stockett of Victory Charter won the girls race in 18:58.8. It was the third straight girls title for the Vipers of Nampa.
