OTHELLO — An Othello man was taken into custody Sunday morning following an alleged assault in Connell.

Brian Gonzalez Luna, 18, was taken into custody at a residence in Othello, according to a media release from the Othello Police Department.

"Connell (PD) notified Othello officers that an assault involving a firearm had occurred within their jurisdiction and advised probable cause existed to seize a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident," wrote Othello Police Chief Brent McFarlane. "Othello officers were familiar with the suspect vehicle, and as part of an unrelated investigation, were already in the vicinity of the registered owner's residence. While monitoring the area, Othello officers observed the suspect vehicle arrive at the residence. Multiple individuals were seen exiting the vehicle and running from it."

One person left the vehicle and went into the residence, McFarlane said. Othello officers, deputies from the Adams County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Patrol surrounded the house. Officers then commanded the suspect, identified as Luna, to exit the residence, which he did.

"Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence and the suspect vehicle. During the execution of the search warrant, officers recovered a stolen 9mm handgun that matched the description provided by victims of the assault investigation," McFarlane said.

The assault remains under investigation by the Connell PD, and the OPD has opened its own investigation into the handgun, McFarlane said.

He praised the cooperation between the various agencies and said each is committed to continuing that cooperation.

Officers are asking that anyone with information about the assault or the handgun to contact the OPD or the Connell PD.
