City Council Decides to Go Ahead with Election Plans and Considers Further Expansion of Limits
The Polson city council Monday night decided to go ahead with plans to hold a combined election asking voters to approve a $195,000 sewage disposal system bond issue and a $195,000 water supply bond issue.
At the same time, the council passed a resolution announcing its intent to investigate the possibility of expanding the city limits and stated that it is in favor of including "logical and contiguous areas."
As for the election, petitions will be circulated this week and will ask that the council schedule an election. The forms will be reviewed when the council resumes its recessed regular meeting next Thursday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the city hall.
The assistance of Harold Eagle, representing the consulting engineering firm of Morrison and Maierle, was obtained to help draw up a base map showing areas that might be included in the expansion.
Commenting on the proposed expansion, Councilman Norin T. Johnson said that while tax rates for people now outside the city would increase about one-third, fire rates would decrease. He said city residents are now paying 13 cents per $1000 for fire insurance and persons outside the city are paying 47 cents per $1000.
Immediately upon coming into the city, Johnson added, these people would have fire fighting and police protection, and fire hydrants would be placed as quickly as possible.
Sewer service would have to be provided by improvement districts as in other sections of the city. Most places already have city water, it was pointed out.
The 1959 State Legislature made expansion procedures easier for cities. If a city decides to expand its limits, it may do so by passing an …
4-H Leaders Have District Conference in Lake County
Some 64 4-H leaders and extension agents from the seven western Montana counties attended the Northwest District Leaders' Conference at Ronan last Thursday and Friday.
Ralph Clemans of Polson, Lake County 4-H Council president, called the group to order and Dr.
Earl Coriell, Polson mayor, welcomed the leaders.
Workshops on teaching techniques, evaluation of leadership, plus 4-H activities and new development provided main emphasis for the program. These were presented by Margaret Kuhl, associate state 4-H club leader, Marvin Costello, Flathead County agent, and Ted Witzel, of the Lake County Extension office.
An awards banquet was held Thursday night with nearly 100 4-H leaders, husbands, wives and friends of 4-H attending. Clover awards were presented to county 4-H club leaders for 5, 10 and 15 years of 4-H service.
Receiving silver clover awards for 5 years' service were Mrs. L. G. Baertsch of Polson, Mrs. Elmer Freshour of St. Ignatius, Mrs. H. E. Harrell of Polson and Mrs. Art Jonasen of St. Ignatius. Ten-year gold clover awards were given to Ed Fowler and Ben Jakes of Mo-ese and Orville Rogers of Charlo.
Lincoln County agent Ed Braton presided at the banquet meeting. Guest speaker was Flathead Courier editor Paul Fugleberg, who compared 4-H adult leaders to advertising agents.
He said it was up to the 4-H adult leaders to see to it that the “4-H brand of merchandise is sold to the entire community year-'round.” He said they should follow the example set by professional advertising agents and use weekly and daily newspapers, radio and TV, direct mail and word of mouth to advertise — or publicize — the 4-H brand.
Pirates Down Ronan 26-6 to Capture Third Place in League
Superior ball playing made the difference last Friday night, as the Polson Pirates trounced the Ronan Chiefs 26-6 in the last conference game for the Pirates. Polson had possession of the ball most of the time, while the Ronan Chiefs just could not play the kind of ball they were capable of playing.
Polson ground out most of its yardage through the line, with long runs made by Leo Howell, Bob Anderson on a punt return, Jamie Boettcher on a pass interception, and Gary Putnam intercepted on the Pirate 18 and ran to the Chief 18. Leo Howell made the longest run of the game, a 72-yard sprint.
Polson received, and Jim White ran to the 37. Boettcher threw an incomplete pass to Owen Thompson, and Stan Thompson went for 6 to make it third and 4. Leo Howell picked up the first down to the Pirate 49. Howell went to the 31, and Thompson to the 19. Ronan intercepted a pass on the 10, but stopped there.
White crashed over the line to the 25, and Schacher ran to the 45. The Chiefs lost 5, and Jim White recovered a fumble on the Pirate 49. Polson picked up 11 yards in three plays, and Bob Anderson threw a long pass to end Owen Thompson in the end zone. White ran the extra point to make it 7-0.
Ronan ran the kickoff to the 30, and a pass was good to the 46. Lockwood ran to the Pirate 39.
George White went for one, and Ted Williams recovered the second fumble of the game ...
