STATE SWIM MEETS: Area teams look to make a point this week in Boise

Both Coeur d'Alene High swim coach Israel Morrow and Lake City coach Shelly Sobek know at this time of the year, each point matters.

It was the difference in 2023 as the Timberwolves won a third-straight team title on the final event of the weekend.

The state swim meet is this Friday and Saturday at the West YMCA in Boise. Prelims are Friday, with championship finals on Saturday.

"If we're going to be contenders for the women's side this year, we're going to have to do it the way we won districts," said Sobek, in her eighth season as coach. "And that's where every point matters and every swim is important. On the men's side, there's a lot more split races, so I'm not quite sure who the biggest contenders are. But we're hoping to make a showing, especially with our two relays we have qualified in order to help us move up in the rankings."

Sobek added Bishop Kelly and Eagle are also contenders for the girls title. The Knights of Boise have won three straight girls team titles.

Morrow, in his second year as Viking coach, likes his chances for a girls trophy as well.

"Currently, our girls are projected second behind Bishop Kelly," Morrow said. "Our boys are projected sixth with a pack of southern schools led by Timberline (Boise) and Mountain View (Meridian). Our girls would need to swim a perfect meet to challenge for a state title. Our boys will need to hit some personal records in the individual events and nail our relays to hit their ceiling of third place."

In addition to its district champions, Lake City was able to secure 14 at-large bids, Coeur d'Alene seven.

Post Falls senior Daisy Whitney is ranked third in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly.

In the 5A meet, Lakeland freshman Jayda Comer is ranked second in the 200 freestyle.

Sandpoint has won the last three state girls team titles and the Bulldogs boys have won the past two.

The 5A prelims are Friday at 8:15 a.m.  PST, with the 6A prelims at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, the 5A finals begin at 8:15 a.m. and 6A finals at 2:30 p.m.

State swimming will be available to stream via the NFHS Network.

Results from both the 6A District 1 and 5A Region 1 meets, held on Oct. 24 at the University of Idaho Pool were released Saturday, following the completion of district competition around the state.

North Idaho coaches waited to release results until all state-qualifying meets statewide were held.

The top two individuals and relays in each classification advance to state, with wild card bids available.
