BONNERS FERRY — A fatal crash just south of Porthill claimed the life of one individual and critically injured another early Sunday morning.

Idaho State Police said the incident occurred near mile marker 5, where a 1978 Chevrolet pickup traveling southbound left the roadway, traveling down a steep embankment and hitting several trees along the way. The truck ended in a near-vertical position against a large tree.

A 20-year-old male driver and a 21-year-old male passenger, both Bonners Ferry residents, occupied the vehicle, neither of which were wearing seatbelts. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the passenger was transported via air ambulance to a nearby hospital. He remains in critical condition.

The crash is under investigation by ISP.
