The Metropolitan Opera begins the 2026-17 Live in HD season with a modern take on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s sparkling comedy, “Così Fan Tutte,” which airs Oct. 3 at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish.

Originally set in Naples, Italy, this production of “Così Fan Tutte” updates the action to an amusement park inspired by Coney Island in the 1950s, where two pairs of lovers find themselves on one emotional thrill ride after another.

Sung in Italian with subtitles, “Così Fan Tutte” follows two young officers, Ferrando and Guglielmo, who are engaged to two sisters, Dorabella and Fiordiligi. Confident in their lovers' faithfulness, they accept a bet from the cynical old philosopher Don Alfonso, who insists that all women are fickle. To test this, the men pretend to leave for war, only to return in exotic disguise and attempt to woo each other's fiancée. As Don Alfonso ups the ante and throws increasingly extreme situations at all four lovers, they can’t help but discover — and reveal — who they really are. Who will end up with who in this exquisite and delightful tale about the ties of love?

Overflowing with gorgeous melodies and hilarious hijinks, Mozart’s satirical comedy of frivolous young love is one of the composer’s most sublime creations, with its gorgeous arias and rich, complex harmonies.

Soprano Federica Lombardi and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey sing Fiordiligi and Dorabella, opposite tenor Duke Kim and baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as Ferrando and Guglielmo. Bass-baritone Gerald Finley reprises his portrayal of the cynical Don Alfonso, with soprano Ana María Martínez as the witty maid Despina.

Phelim McDermott’s production is full of “colorful, inventive” staging, while Nimrod David Pfeffer takes the podium for this musical masterpiece.

The Live in HD experience includes exclusive behind-the-scenes content and cast interviews.
