William Leon “Bill” Peterson, affectionately known as “Sonny,” was born Sept. 14, 1939, and passed away Sept. 13, 2026, one day before his 87th birthday.

The son of Leon and Gail Peterson, Bill was the brother of Kenis Turpin and Dallas Peterson. He is survived by his daughter, Valerie Peterson Orlandini of California; his nephew, Michael Peterson of Polson; his beloved little dog, Susie, who was a cherished companion; and his son, Tony, also of Polson.

After high school, Bill joined the United States Navy and was stationed in Italy, where he worked as a mechanic on military aircraft. He served honorably before returning to Polson, where he began a family with Patricia Johnson. Together, they raised their two children, Tony and Valerie.

Though their marriage eventually ended, Bill’s love and devotion to both children remained unwavering. He worked hard to provide for them and remained a steady, caring father throughout their lives.

Bill later married Faye McMullen, who remained his beloved companion until her passing in 2018.

Quiet, independent and generous, Bill had a huge heart and a kind spirit. He was an avid reader who often enjoyed two or three books at once, and he loved Flathead Lake and Montana’s natural beauty. Though his social circle was small, those who knew him well loved him dearly.
