Just when the Bravettes thought they had each set won, the Wolfpack snatched it right back.
Glacier (6-6) rallied from a set down twice and survived a late scare in the fourth to defeat Flathead (2-12) in a back-and-forth Crosstown volleyball matchup Thursday night at Flathead High School.
“It wasn’t easy at all, but I felt like we all worked together as a team,” Glacier setter Madi Stevens said. “Throughout the season, we really show how we can be a team, and tonight was it for sure.”
Flathead’s Brynn Kossman finished with a match-high 20 kills, four aces and nine service points to lead the Bravettes, who fell to 2-5 in league matches. Makenna Aldrich added 13 kills and Anna Bain totaled 24 assists.
The Bravettes led 9-5 in the opening set before Glacier started chipping away. Allie Krueger helped pull the Wolfpack even at 17, but Kossman answered with three aces during a late Flathead surge to close out the set 25-18.
“They were serving really well, we weren’t expecting it,” Krueger said. “The way their defense works, they were definitely picking apart our defense as well.”
In the second, Flathead stayed aggressive and jumped ahead 6-1, but Glacier again refused to let the set get away from them, tying Flathead at 17 before Audrey Mitchell gave Glacier its first lead with a kill. Glacier scored eight of the final 13 points to take the set 25-22 and even the match.
The third set was all Flathead as the Bravettes raced out to another 6-1 advantage and never gave up the lead. Reilly Judd helped kept the pressure on from the service line and finished with 15 service points; she also added five aces and 17 digs.
The Bravettes spread the ball around for a 25-19 win to take a 2-1 lead.
Glacier had their backs against the wall in the fourth as Flathead held a 19-16 lead and later went up 23-21 with a chance to finish the match, but Glacier took four straight points as Mitchell put away a kill for set point, and a Flathead attack sailed long on the next rally to force a fifth.
“I think it says a lot about how we all dig deep,” Stevens said. “We show support to each other and play for the person beside us.”
The final set was tied at nine before Glacier finally created the separation they looked for all night.
Mitchell recorded a block, followed it with another kill and Kruger added one of her own as the Wolfpack marched ahead 12-9. The Wolfpack held off one final push from the Bravettes to take the match 15-12. They’re 5-2 in league play.
Mitchell and Krueger finished with 15 kills for Glacier. Stevens recorded 47 assists and Addison Thramer added 17 digs.
Both teams return to action against Hellgate, with the Bravettes hosting the Knights on Tuesday and the Wolfpack return to the Wolf Den on Thursday.
